#7 shirt should be retired

Tue Jun 13, 2017 3:35 pm

Whitts a true legend at this club.

Re: #7 shirt should be retired

Not for me! :(

It's just a shirt number and it's the man who deserves the accolades. Going on that theory, some teams would have no numbers left if they 'retired' the number of every player they classed as a 'great'

Peter Whittingham is the Cardiff City legend, not the No.7 shirt! ;) :ayatollah:

I know what you mean, however, sometimes there are exceptions... this is one of them..
be a long time before another player stays loyal to our club for 10 years.

Yeah totally agree, Peter Whittingham is similar like Steven Gerrard, Lampard or a Wayne Rooney, once a legend retires at there club like Peter Whittingham they should retire there shirt number and let us fans enjoy the memories in the past of Whitts wearing the traditional 7 Shirt

I hope we don't give it out this year as it will add a bit more pressure to whoever gets i,but we need to find our next superstar

Hes not the only one to have worn the number 7 as there have been many players more deserving over the years
for a long time teams wore 1 to 11 remember not squad numbers if we go by your idea whitts would not have the number seven as it would have been retired way bacķ

he is though the only no7 to have made 4 wembley appearances for us.
and the player that has worn the no7 in the most Cardiff wins.

I'm not a big fan of this new craze to be honest so definitely no from me. If we were as big as Barcelona or Real Madrid and had as many "legends" as they had our shirts would start their numbers at 100.

Ridiculous suggestion. It should be an honour for any player here on after to wear that number 7 shirt, I am all for not giving it out until someone of Whitts stature emerges but retiring it is daft.

I'm one of Whittinghams biggest fans but this is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard for a while!
Except for the Forum Fools pathetic ramblings of course.

You don't own the number your a custodian of it, the challenge should be to the next 7 to leave it in a better condition than he received it in

Only one club I know of has a retired number, and that is West Ham United who retired number 6 for Bobby Moore.

Retiring shirts is not something that I agree with, a very American thing to do and there have been some club legends at other clubs who's shirts have not been retired.

He has hardly achieved anything worthy of retiring his shirt though. He is probably your most decorated player in the past few decades but he hasn't really helped the club achieve anything.

For example Leon Britton has been with us since 2002 and has been instrumental in leading us from league 2 to Premier League main stayers, winning a major trophy and getting to the knockout stages of European competition - and I still don't think retiring the number 7 shirt is warranted.

Whittingham, while although he has been a loyal servant and consistently up there with your best players each season - he hasnt achieved anything worthy of that accolade.

Didn't Britton leave Swansea at 1 point?

I agree that retiring his shirt is too far

Yes, he went to Sheffield United for half a season and returned that very season.

He has played over 500 games for us and played for the club for 15 consecutive seasons through the clubs most successful ever era. If anyone from the Welsh clubs deserve it then it is clearly Leon, but as you say, even that would be too far.

Swansea have retired a shirt in the past however, number 40 for the late Besian Idrizaj who tragically died while signed to us. It is usually reserved for players who die while serving the club.
