Report: Celtic may face last-gasp agony with Jonny Hayes deal hijacked, final decision coming today

HITC

Monday 5th June 2017

Celtic could end up missing out on Aberdeen winger Jonny Hayes.

According to the Daily Mail, Celtic will make a final decision on their pursuit of Aberdeen ace Jonny Hayes after Cardiff hijacked their bid.

The Bhoys may have completed an unbeaten domestic treble with their 2-1 Scottish Cup final win over Aberdeen, but manager Brendan Rodgers still wants to bring in new signings this summer.

With European football now a real priority for Rodgers, he must look to add more quality to his ranks, and another wing appears to be on his radar whether Manchester City loanee Patrick Roberts returns or not.

Rodgers' top target so far has been Aberdeen winger Jonny Hayes, who scored the Dons' goal in that Scottish Cup final clash, but the Daily Mail report that Cardiff City have now swooped in at the 11th hour.

Celtic allegedly had medical staff on standby ready to complete a deal for Hayes on Friday, as he has agreed terms on a deal with the Bhoys, but there have been hold-ups in sealing the move.

Aberdeen wanted Ryan Christie in the deal having taken him on loan in January, but with Celtic unwilling to let him leave permanently, they would only agree to a £1m fee plus Christie on loan for the season.

With Rodgers also looking to bring Roberts back to Glasgow this summer, Cardiff have allegedly gazumped Celtic by offering £1.2million, leaving Celtic with a big decision to make.

The Bhoys will reportedly have a final decision on their pursuit of Hayes by the end of the day, with the strong possibility that they will have to give up more – whether it's cash or Christie permanently – than they had originally hoped.

The 29-year-old winger worked with Rodgers at Reading as a youngster and could reunite with the Celtic boss after a superb league season which saw him find the net nine times for Aberdeen, but the deal is being pushed to the brink.

Cardiff have made a £1.2m bid for Aberdeen winger Jonny Hayes, according to Sky sources.

The Championship club have rivalled a similar bid from Scottish champions Celtic, who are in talks with the Republic of Ireland international.

Celtic's offer could also see 22-year-old midfielder Ryan Christie go the other way to Pittodrie.

Hayes made 43 appearances for Aberdeen last season as they finished runners-up in the Scottish Premiership, scoring 11 goals.

Just wondering, but couldn't we offer Kennedy in a similar way?

It would be nice to see us "hijacking" a move for a change although I can't see it happening.

I remember us losing out on Jody Morris and Marcus Bent a few years ago when the deals were all but done.

Yep, it has been known for players (and their Agents) to phish for 'a little extra' before ending up at their preferred choice of club and the two you mention above are great examples of players who never really wanted to come here if they could possibly help it! :ayatollah:

I fully understand the 'mercenary' attitude of modern players, as they have little or no real affinity to any club or its fans on a professional basis; a prime example of which was our own Joe Ledley when he decided to leave for the bright lights of the Premier League. And who could blame him...if only it had been THE Premier League and not the purely financial lure of the weaker one-team Scottish version?! :(

Cardiff City have made a £1.2m bid for Aberdeen winger Jonny Hayes, according to reports.

The Bluebirds have rivalled a similar bid from Scottish champions Celtic, who are also in talks with the Republic of Ireland international, say Sky Sports.

Celtic’s offer could also see 22-year-old midfielder Ryan Christie go the other way to Pittodrie.

Cardiff tried to sign Hayes twice in the January transfer window but both bids were rejected, and the player subsequently signed a new deal with Aberdeen until 2019.

Hayes made 43 appearances for Aberdeen last season as they finished runners-up in the Scottish Premiership, scoring 11 goals.

The 29-year-old began his career in Reading’s academy but he never made a senior appearance for the Royals and signed for Leicester in 2007.

Hayes struggled for game time at the Foxes and spent time on loan at Northampton and Macclesfield before joining Inverness Caledonian Thistle on a free transfer in 2009.

After three years in the Highlands he moved East to Aberdeen, for whom he has made over 200 appearances and scored 30 goals.

They've changed their minds apparently, looking at other targets.
Good news

That's just Celtic trying to push things along to give the player an ultimatum.

It will still be down to the player and the fact that we offered more will have no bearing.

What time today, exactly?

A 29 year old who has never played higher than the Scottish League (unless I missed something) for £1.2 million?
No thanks. But if he does sign I will support him.

Not questioning that, and I hope he is great for us.But where has he been all this time if he is that good? Surely a bigger club would have signed him by now?

We've put a bid in today, so we're hardly Guna find out if he's signed. Bit more drawn out than just a bid being accepted...
