Celtic target Jonny Hayes starts for Ireland as Cardiff up their bid to land Aberdeen winger

The Daily Record

Sunday 4th June 2017

Jonny Hayes started for Ireland in tonight's friendly victory over Uruguay as his proposed move from Aberdeen to Celtic took a new twist.

The 29-year-old winger took to the field at the Aviva Stadium as Cardiff City reportedly upped their bid to land the player from under Celtic's noses.

Hayes looked set to conclude his move from Pittodrie to Parkhead this week with the Press and Journal reporting he had agreed terms on a three-year deal worth in the region of £1.2m. An alternative package quoted was a lower figure plus a new loan deal for Ryan Christie.

However with the move still to be finalised Cardiff look to have re-entered the bidding war with Sky Sports reporting a £1.2m bid from the Championship side this evening.

Cardiff are long term admirers of the former Inverness player and had three offers around the £500,000 mark booted out by the Dons in January before Hayes signed a new two-year deal.

But Aberdeen now look certain to sell their prize asset for a seven-figure fee.

Hayes won his fourth cap as Ireland tackled Uruguay ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Austria in a week's time.

Goals from Jonathan Walters, Cyrus Christie and James McLean sealed a 3-1 win for Martin O'Neill's side.

Come to the bluebirds and play every week and be the main man or go to Celtic and sit on their bench for two seasons then be sold on to some other pub team

Apparently the Aberdeen manager would rather he joins us than Celtic - makes sense, why would you want to sell one of your best players to a rival when a team from another league wants him?

But their manager might be off to the Championship anyway.

Every time I've seen him, he's looked impressive. Trust our manager's judgement.

I can't see this being true. After just taking on a winger, we've just more than doubled our initial offer for him? Really can't see an offer like that coming from Warnock
