Manchester United could make an ambitious move for Real Madrid star Gareth Bale, the Manchester Evening News reports.

The newspaper also says that part of the reason for a cooling in the pursuit of Antoine Griezmann was so United could spend more money on a team-focused forward like Bale.

The Wales international signed a £150m six-year Real contract until earlier in the season but doubt continues to surround his future, who has spent the last six weeks sidelined with a calf injury and his replacement Isco has thrived in his absence.
