Cardiff City’s 23 Championship opponents have now been confirmed following Huddersfield Town’s play-off final win over Reading on penalties yesterday afternoon.
The distances
The shortest trip for Cardiff next season will be the Severnside Derby with just under 40 miles between Cardiff City and Bristol City.
Other short journeys include Reading, Birmingham, Aston Villa ,Wolves Brentford, Fulham, QPR, Millwall and Burton, with Nottingham Forest just a short journey further.
Cardiff City, Bristol City,Reading, all the London clubs and Ipswich and Norwich face some long trips, but so do Sunderland,Middlesborough,Hull City and Preston the other way.
There are plenty of long journeys though with a whopping nine teams based further North of the Midlands.
Yorkshire possess a strong contingent in next year’s Championship, featuring both Sheffield clubs.
The furthest Cardiff will have to travel is their trip to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland, a daunting 620-mile round trip.
Middlesbrough also offer one of the longest treks for the Bluebirds’ faithful and as usual, the trips to Eastern clubs Ipswich and Norwich will also require a fair outlay in fuel.
The budgets
Neil Warnock will be given a modest budget of around £5-£6 million for the summer, and while that won’t come close to matching some, that’s just how the veteran boss likes it.
Warnock will need to work his magic to bring the Bluebirds up to scratch with the top teams and it’s a challenge he will relish.
The team with the biggest budget in the Championship next season is likely to be Sunderland as they plot a route back to the top flight.
Other big spenders could include Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough, Hull City and perhaps even Harry Redknapp’s Birmingham City who were subject to a takeover last season.
Aston Villa were another hoping to splash the cash this summer, but they could be bound by FFP restrictions, something Cardiff know all too much about.
The league’s smallest spenders could include the likes of Burton Albion, Ipswich Town and Reading.
Those clubs could join newly promoted Millwall and Bolton Wanderers, with Sheffield United expected to benefit from a more generous kitty than those who join them from League One.
Budget doesn’t county for everything though, and those ‘smaller clubs’ will be inspired by the incredible feat Huddersfield Town achieved at Wembley on Saturday.
The managers
Some of next season’s favourites in Middlesbrough, Hull City and Sunderland are yet to confirm their manager for next season, and Leeds United join them after Garry Monk’s shock departure.
Steve Bruce’s presence at Aston Villa certainly raises their chances next season, and the same can be said for this season’s play-off semi-finalists Fulham with Slavisa Jokanovic, a reported target of West Ham’s.
Gary Rowett is tipped to do well with Derby County after impressing at the back-end of last season, and Harry Redknapp will be a boost for Birmingham City.
Paul Lambert was another tipped to do well with Wolves, but he departed his role this morning after reports of being replaced.
On top of all that, Cardiff have a manager renowned for promotion in Neil Warnock and his desire to achieve a record-breaking eighth promotion could play into their hands.
The mood in the stands
The feeling around the Cardiff City Stadium is pretty positive going into next season with the vast majority of fans well and truly behind Neil Warnock and his team.
That can’t be said for some of the Bluebirds’ opponents next season with defeated play-off teams such as Fulham, Sheffield Wednesday and even more so Reading who will need a huge pick-up.
That can also be said for the relegated teams in Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Hull City.
Nottingham Forest endured another dire season of last, joining Bristol City and Birmingham City who had quite the fall from grace.
QPR are Ipswich Town were gloomy places to be at times last season and neither are tipped to do well.
Sheffield United on the other hand, are likely to be backed by a large support after finally returning to the second tier, so they could be a club to keep an eye on if the mood of the fans translates to form on the pitch.
Teams such as Derby County and Aston Villa are always backed by a bumper crowd, giving them a boost they may need to return to the big time.
Cardiff City’s chances
They say the Championship gets tougher every year, but this year it would be hard to agree.
Sunderland have arguably been one of the weakest teams in the top-flight for a number of years and they are joined by Middlesbrough and Hull City, who both lasted just one season alongside the elite.
From League One, Sheffield United will provide quality given their rich history and current budget.
And the Blades are joined by Bolton Wanderers and Millwall – both teams are no strangers to the second tier.
Next season could well be the best Championship season for a long time – there is no club who will be able to canter to success, and from League One, there’s no weak team likely to drop off without a fight.
It’s a real level playing field and perhaps the most open Championship season in a very long time.
Cardiff can benefit from that and while everyone will be fancying their chances going into the summer, with Neil Warnock, the Bluebirds have an expert and who could give them the edge.
Warnock and his men haven’t got the budget of other clubs and that could rule them out of automatic promotion contention – at least on paper – but they have every chance of making that top six on the evidence of their performances under Neil Warnock.
The betting odds
The betting companies place Aston Villa as favourites to be promoted next season and they’re joined by Fulham, Middlesbrough, Derby County, Hull City and Sunderland.
Cardiff find themselves as low as 16th favourites, that’s lower than Severnside rivals Bristol City who escaped relegation with one game to spare this season.
Burton Albion are the underdogs alongside Barnsley, Preston North End, Ipswich Town and Bolton Wanderers.
