NOTTINGHAM FOREST TOP OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR GIVING YOUNGSTERS A CHANCE

Top 4 Clubs for playing their Youngsters

Nottingham Forest
Barnsley
Ipswich
Leeds

The Worst Two Clubs

Sheffield Wednesday were the worst for giving youngsters time on the pitch followed closely by Cardiff City.

Nottingham Forest are the club who have given players under the age of twenty-two, the most game time in the 2016/17 Championship campaign, according to figures released by Ipswich Town Academy’s.

The table shows club by club, how many minutes were spent on the pitch by under 22’s belonging to them and on loan.

Forest handed a total of 13,314 minutes on the pitch to the under 22’s, with loanees making up just 1,649 of those. Barnsley were a distant second, having had their youngsters in action for 10,573 minutes of their Championship campaign.

Ex-boss Phllippe Montanier handed debuts to Matty Cash and Alex Iacovitti, as Joe Worrall, Jordan Smith and Ben Brereton all impressed as they’ve burst onto the first team scene this year under Montanier and current boss, Mark Warburton.

Academy graduate, Ben Osborn also cemented his place as a kingpin of the side, as the 22- year-old, who has now made over one-hundred appearances for The Reds, helped guide them to survival on the final day.

Ipswich themselves were third, as their famously productive youth system once again payed dividends, as the highly rated 18- year-old, Andre Dozzell made his first team bow this season.

Leeds were fourth with just over 8,500, but Sheffield Wednesday propped up the table, having given just 384 minutes to under 22’s, almost 13,000 less than toppers, Nottingham Forest. Carlos Carvalhal presented 13 minutes of first team action to youngsters owned by the club, all of which imparted to 17-year-old George Hirst.

Wednesday were by far the least rewarding to their own young crop, as they are the only side to give less than 1,000 minutes to players in the lower age bracket. Cardiff City were the closest to the Owls, with 1,077 .

Personally I feel we have now failed for years to bring youngsters through and this above shows we have failed badly.

To see youngsters coming through for me means a lot for me and they are the future of the club :bluebird: :bluebird:

worst thing is we used to bring youth players through often but since tan has come in our academy isnt fit for purpose

Agree Annis

producing youngsters for team future and to sell as assets is key to any club below top 10 in the premier.

For us - it can also keep continuity if managers come and go in the hot bead that is the championship.

I haven't really seen an improvement at all in 10 years - a very important part of the business of football....

That study also includes loan players, which is irrelevant to each club as they're not their players. Also, we can't play them if we don't have anyone decent, and we don't. Mackay brought through Ralls, who's the latest academy player to be any good.

Let's hope Warnock and Bellamy breathe some life into the academy.

We have had a bloated fat club for a long time that because of the instability hasn't been ruthless enough.

Ginge, earnie, Gunther, ledley, Rambo, Ralls were all in the first team set up well before they were 20. We were acting as if we were Man city or Chelsea with masses of registered U21's that ultimately were never going to make the required grade. I can't believe a club that in recent history has been a top 10 championship club has released players that end up at Weston or Colchester or fail to gain a full professional contract......

Bellamy knows whats what and appears ruthless enough to find the odd gem by letting those he doesn't think will make the grade go. Mark Harris being the obvious example. He looked out of place in the miniscule subs appearances, but we must think he has something about him, to be promoted to the first team set up so young.

We may lose one or two, but I can't think of any mistakes in the last 10 years.

Try going back longer than eight years it's not just one man's fault this problem existed well before tan, but guess most people's memories don't go behond then. But hopefully with bellers in charge and club appears to be shifting its stance on youngsters things will change. :occasion5:

I always liked Sams vision here.

He used to play 14 year olds in the Under 16s and 16 year olds in the Under 18s and then the 18 year olds were either good enough to play in the reserves/first team or out.

I also remember speaking to both Sam and Lennie Lawrence (our manager at the time) saying to me (LL saying not Sam) we would be lucky to get one professional from this crop.

Included in the crop were:

Cameron Jerome
Joe Ledley
Byron Jacobson

to name but a few - and I dare say there would be many more.

Ramsey, Gunter, Matthews etc

Paul, what anyone thinks of Sam, one thing he was obsessed with was our youth and playing local players :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

we had a golden age a few years back .but other than that its been historically slim pickings from our youth /academy.
since Tan.  Tan must be about 120 years old ...even our 1927 cup winning team only had 3 welshmen in it.
what top welsh international players over the years have been products of Cardiff Citys youth system.? please answer because i need cheering up

Didn't do them much good avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth.

All well and good playing youngsters but I'm sure it wasnt a policy more of a necessity due to their problems? Not sure their fans were happy with the situation. :old:

Spot on

At least we seem to be moving in the right direction. CB will know who has the bottle to make it and appears like he isn't afraid to upset people. Bit like Warnock.
