Has Rotherham United's Danny Ward earned second Leeds United chance?

Leeds United News

29/05/17

The reputation of one-time Leeds United youngster Danny Ward has been enhanced despite a disastrous season for Rotherham United.

A decade after running out on Leeds United to join Bolton Wanderers’ youth setup, Danny Ward would surely have to give serious consideration to the prospect of returning to Elland Road.

After netting 11 goals in an otherwise wretched Rotherham United side who posted the lowest points tally in the second tier since the introduction of two points for a win, the striker will be relieved that he only has a year left on his contract.

Because there should be no shortage of suitors offering him a Championship lifeline. The Examiner reported that Huddersfield Town had a bid of £1 million rejected in January while Wales Online claim that Cardiff City will test The Millers’ resolve with an approach this summer.

The question, however, is whether Leeds United will make their interest known. There are certainly one or two alarm bells, given that Ward made the decision to leave the club to continue his development elsewhere.

Furthermore, Ward only scored twice in 16 games after links with Huddersfield emerged in January.

Wood and Ward?

However, after missing out on the play-offs thanks to a run of one win in eight at the end of the season, Leeds will know that attacking reinforcements are a must.

Even if Chris Wood, the Championship’s top scorer, remains at Elland Road beyond this summer, the lack of other goalscorers in the squad cost Leeds dear last season. They cannot let history repeat itself.

Ward, who could also fill in on the left as an upgrade on the divisive Souleymane Doukara, would at least take some of the pressure off Leeds’ talismanic New Zealand striker.

That is if Cardiff do not get there first and Warnock looks favourite

Cardiff City are interested in signing Rotherham United’s Danny Ward according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon

Monday 29th May 2017

Report 72

While Rotherham had a miserable season as they were rooted to the bottom of the Sky Bet Championship for the majority of the season and their relegation ended up being expected rather than the nasty shock it is for most teams. But while it was mostly terrible for the Millers, their striker Ward actually had a good season. He would end up scoring 12 goals and any of the club’s bright moments this season usually came through him.

But with Rotherham set to play in Sky Bet League One next season and Ward only having a year left on his contract, he looks set to leave the club for two reasons. One, Ward will be seen as too good for that division because of his form in the Championship and two should Rotherham not get promoted back to the second tier at the first attempt, they’ll end up losing him on a free transfer in a year’s time.

And Cardiff are interested in signing Ward because of this situation. Their head coach Neil Warnock is very familiar with Ward after he managed him during his short spell at Rotherham at the end of last season and is looking to reunite in South Wales as the club look to challenge for a place in the play-offs. But they will be expected to pay out for him as the Millers value Ward at £1m.

Rotherham's Danny Ward

It is thought he will attract plenty of interest following Rotherham's relegation, with Ward having just one year left on his current deal with the south Yorkshire club.

And respected football journalist Alan Nixon claims Neil Warnock will look to make use of his contacts at former club Rotherham to sign the versatile attacker this summer.

Height: 1.8m (70 3/4 ins or 5ft' 10 3/4ins)
Career start: 2009 (I think that's the same in metric)
Current squad number: No.9 (again, I believe the same in metric)

Hope that helps ;) :thumbright:

Worth a punt at 1 mill to score 12 in the worst team in the championship must have something about him.
