If we didn't know before, the fancy-dressed away end made it perfectly clear the supporters' thoughts on Peter Whittingham's contract situation. No sooner had he taken to the field as a second-half substitute, the 500-or-so travelling fans has asked the stalwart to do the 'Ayatollah' – which he quickly responded to while closing down an opponent – before they sang loudly that 'We want you to stay'.
Warnock says he wants the same but is openly relaxed about the whole issue. It was always unlikely the midfielder's future and contract would be a priority for the manager who has other areas of the squad to sort, but if he really wanted to make sure the playmaker was part of things next year you'd imagine it would not take much to persuade Whittingham to stick around for another year or so, even if he's no longer the guaranteed starter he once was.
