Just read the full story and sounds like the boro fan has done more than just call someone shrek. If it was over something so trivial then why didn't he show in court?

In fairness, it does seem there is a bit more to it than name-calling, as he was also inciting others who had been drinking to join in, so maybe the decision was simply to remove the source of the problem. Still seems a little petty though and surely just removing him from the environment would have sufficed?

An arrest warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Middlesbrough football fan by a judge in London.

Jamie Lathan, 28, was arrested by seven police officers after calling one of them “Shrek” during an away match with Spurs.

The 28-year-old was found guilty in his absence of using threatening behaviour at Tottenham’s White Hart Lane on February 4, after he failed to turn up at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court .

After his conviction District Judge Julia Newton issued a warrant for Lathan’s arrest ordering that he should be brought to court to be sentenced.

The court heard that Lathan, of Suffolk Street, Stockton , called police officer, Sergeant Mark Fletcher, “Shrek”, and called him “ugly” and swore at him. He then raised his arm to his shoulder causing the officer to fear being assaulted.

When Lathan was arrested, other Middlesbrough fans became abusive to police, threw bottles and struck officers, the court was told.

Sgt Fletcher told the court he had been directed to the bar area at half time where they were reported to “keep an eye on” some “boisterous” fans.

He added: “I spoke to Lathan and he started to call me ‘ugly’ and then went on to say, ‘I know you, I’ve seen you before, you’re Shrek’.

“I’m in the police, we’re all used to nicknames, but I told him to watch his language.”

The officer said he did not mind being called names but took offence at Lathan’s choice of language.

Sgt Fletcher said: “I told him to move because I didn’t want to talk to him any more.

“He walked away to an area on the other side of the room.

“While he was there he was blowing some kisses in the air and raised his middle finger towards me.

“I felt he was very angry and wanted to provoke a reaction from me. I felt affronted as a person. I spoke to my team and told them I wanted to go and speak to someone.

“I placed my left hand on his right elbow to guide him away and his reaction was to pull his arm away in a gesture I thought was threatening.

“He drew his hand up to his shoulder and I took him by the upper bicep and lower wrist to escort him out the area - I had some colleagues with me.


“The crowd started shouting and swearing – profanities at police and myself – and the crowd was whipped into a frenzy.

“We received beer bottles to the face and head.

“I moved him to the stairwell and stood behind the barricade before he was eventually arrested.”

Having read above account of events the copper comes across as a sensitive soul and couldn't take being verbally abused! Simple answer was to eject fan from ground or take himself away from the fan? But having seen couple of incidents concerning police at the city it doesn't surprise me at what happened.

Sounds to be from that statement the copper is a bit of a pansy so defo not"shrek" maybe more donkey.
