Neil Warnock reveals Vincent Tan holds the key for his summer aims at Cardiff City

By Chris Wathan

Friday 5th May 2017

Vincent Tan will hold the key to Neil Warnock's aims for this summer after the Bluebirds boss revealed he will hold off on pushing through plans until face-to-face meetings with the Cardiff City owner.

Warnock has revealed he has requested personal time with Tan and will fly to Malaysia at the end of the month to talk through his hopes for the team and the club.

And he hinted he will hold off in finalising potential deals as he gets clarity on Tan's thoughts.

Warnock has spoken to Tan regularly since being appointed to replace Paul Trollope and guide the side away from relegation worry back in October.

And the pair met when Tan visited London on business in January with people close to both men saying that they have enjoyed an excellent relationship through the campaign.

It saw Warnock agree a new deal in February having received the messages of ambition he wanted as he aims for a promotion challenge in his first full season in charge.

But the 68-year-old remains keen on sitting down with Tan in the company of chief executive Ken Choo later this month as the serious business of squad rebuilding gets underway.

“I met (chairman) Mehmet Dalman and Ken this week but I’m going to fly out to see Vincent towards the end of May,” said Warnock ahead of Sunday's final game of the season, the away trip to play-off qualified Huddersfield.

“It's my request; it’s okay to talk on the telephone but when you want to talk about numerous things regarding the club I think it has to be face to face.

Neil Warnock at his first press conference with Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman.
“I’m going with Ken and a meeting should clarify a lot of things. He has the final say on a lot of things because he owns the club.

“There’s certain situations I want to speak to him about and I can’t do that on the phone, not when you’re hard of hearing like me.”

Warnock was quick to stress that he heads there in a positive mindset but it appears likely that the veteran manager may want final assurances over the money he has available in terms of wages.

He revealed that further talks over a new deal with Bruno Manga will come after his meeting with Tan, with Manga's contract set to be among the topics to be discussed in Malaysia.

“I'm very positive about it, it's me who wanted it because we have to talk face to face,” added Warnock. “Vincent's coming over for the Champions League final which is only a few days after we're scheduled to go there, but when he comes over he's got that many things on his plate it's difficult to get the two or three hours we need.

“And I'm hoping by going there we can find the time that is needed to discuss a lot of points because it's a big club this and it needs the main person to be on board with where we're trying to go and what we're trying to do.”

Warnock has already lined up several targets and has held talks with players, though expects to have to wait until June before pushing ahead with any deals.

To date he has prioritised sorting out new deals – or lack of them – for his existing squad and will lay out his thoughts on the futures of several in his ranks ahead of the game at Huddersfield.

“I'm clear in my mind about what I want to do, but then it's getting players over the line,” explained Warnock. “This time of year there are certain players everyone seems to be after. I'm talking to one at the moment. Two clubs have come out of the woodwork, one a really, really good club, but I'm hoping my relationship will clinch it, that he wants to play for us, he wants to play for me. I'm still optimistic about it but you don't know. Some clubs will out another '0' on the end and blow you out of the water.”

All sounds very promising and hopefully the 'special relationship' Neil Warnock has with players who will 'put a shift in' will be key to certain signings, including the one mentioned above! :thumbright:

It seems that Neil Warnock has the trust of Vincent Tan and the others who matter at the club (specifically Ken Choo and Mehmet Dalman) and hopefully he is out to persuade Mr Tan that a little 'extra' money to secure a new contract for Bruno Ecuelle-Manga will benefit the club going forward. If the club then don't move forward as hoped, at least they will have a contracted player with some value to trade with at a later point; a win-win situation for all involved! :thumbright: :ayatollah:

Not sure how far warnock will get with persuading Tan to put extra cash into the club. Unless I am mistaken, the club debt has been reduced by about one million pounds in the last year or so, which is a drop in the ocean given the total amount owed. The debt to equity situation which has been much discussed does'nt appear to be making much progress at the moment. If the plan is to clear the debt and make the club self sufficient, there is a huge amount to do, and that is why I believe that Tan may be reluctant to agree to release much in the way of funds at the minute.

I think staying in this league is the priority and getting the debt down.

I think it has to be, although neither will be easy.

I would explore naming rights on the stadium for starters, a stadium that holds European finals and Internationals , surely someone out there would be interested

Perhaps given his history and contacts it could be called The Big Mac Meal Stadium.
