"It leaves a nasty taste in my mouth" – Neil Warnock backs calls to fine Huddersfield over fielding weakened team
By talkSPORT

Huddersfield Town SHOULD be fined for fielding a weakened team against Birmingham on Saturday, Neil Warnock has told talkSPORT.

The Championship club are facing EFL sanctions after manager David Wagner made ten changes to his team against the Blues, having already secured their place in the play-offs.

The Terriers lost the game 2-0, gifting a three points which could be crucial to Birmingham, who are fighting alongside Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers for second-tier safety.

And Warnock - boss of Championship rivals Cardiff - knows all too well how much understrength line-ups can cost the teams further down the table.

He suffered relegation in 2007 with Sheffield United after Liverpool [against Fulham] and Manchester United [against West Ham] both played weakened XI’s against the Blades' rivals at the bottom late in the season.

Speaking about Huddersfield’s potential fine, he told talkSPORT: “I know there are people who support what he’s done, what they do, and say they have to look after their own club, but it just leaves such a nasty taste in the mouth.

“I can’t forget it even now – Liverpool played 11 reserves at Fulham and got beat 1-0, and I don’t think Fulham would have got another point that season.

“They don’t realise, I don’t think, the effect it has on the other teams. Nobody does because they’re just looking after their own, which you can’t blame in a way.

“It just doesn’t help at all. It still leaves a nasty taste in my mouth now when I think about those selections.”

I read something a Huddersfield player said earlier and I have to say I think I agree.

Huddersfield have earned the right to rotate their squad by their performances through the season and if other Clubs are in a relegation battle its not their problem, they have earned their play off spot and now their right to rotate and rest players they feel need it.

we played Wigan 2 weeks ago who at the time still had a slim chance . Zohore was rested/semi injured.?
had we needed the ponts desperately im convinced he would have played.
plus how often do you read fans saying give the youngsters a run out we have nothing to play for.
im afraid peoples views are determined on where exactly THEIR club are in the table

I agree and you make a good point about the Wigan game as it shows that Warnock has and would do it himself if he felt it was going to be in the best interest of his club.

Ultimately your in the position your in after 44 games through your own performances throughout the season and to then expect other Clubs to play their strongest teams when its maybe not in their interest is a bit of a kop out for me.

Not sure what Huddersfield have done wrong to be fair, they have fielded 11 players from their registered squad, on what basis can you fine a Club, what have they actually done wrong, you may aswell rip squads up and the the 23 or whatever it is you name at the start of the season if that's the case. I'm not sure if there is a rule in place but if it is felt that strongly about maybe the FA should put a rule in place that your not allowed to make more than say 5 changes per game (more if proven injuries). If they fine Huddersfield now surely it opens up a whole can or worms, we should get fined ourselves realy for the team we played against Fulham in the Cup.

Huddersfield have a squad and he's fully utilised it resting players for the players offs. Just my opinion but I don't see them as having done anything wrong.

However if Cardiff were fighting for safety I'd probably be screaming from the rooftops about it.

Surely the point is rotate the squad if the result doesn't affect either relegation or promotion issues? The competition has to have integrity and that means every team must do it's best to win a game they take part in especially if it effects relegation or promotion.

If it is a nothing to play for mid table end of season clash then by mutual consent (and maybe the consent of the FL) teams can play weakened teams (i.e. give youth a chance).

Huddersfield were wrong to do what they did as they were honour bound to play their best available team and I really hope they get stuffed in the play-offs.

What would your take on it be if Cardiff have made the players offs for the premiership, Warnock opts to rest our first team so they are fresh for the play off challenge. Would you wish Cardiff get stuffed?

And what would your take be if we needed Hudders to beat Brum to avoid the drop.

Not really comparing apples with apples though resting one player who has had an extended run of games to resting 10 players...

Nothing wrong with what they done and it is sad for the teams on receiving end but it's football, you should be allowed to field whoever you want and shouldn't be no fines it's embarrassing.

If Huddersfield won 5-0 there would be nothing said.

Completely wrong on this. Liverpool fielded a second team away at Madrid a few seasons ago and lost 1-0 and fielded a strong first team that lost 3-0.. it's down to the players he fields.

It's about integrity of the league! Making changes is ok but not putting out a full reserve side that is morally wrong considering what was at stake for the 3 teams affected by their actions, they should have done it for our game where it didn't effect anyone and players could still have had 2wks rest!
Before start of playoffs, at end of day if we got relegated by their actions people will not be sideing with them that's for sure. :old:

Absolute rubbish! If they are named as a professional and have a professional contract they have every right to be part of the team.

If you have a good enough season and are in a position to rest your best players then you deserve to be able to do that if it helps your cause. No team or fans worry about other teams, if Forest get relegated it will not be because Huddersfield played a weakened team against Birmingham it will be because the SCABS have been shit all season. :laughing6:
