Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy reveals plans to discuss potential deal for Cardiff City's Emyr Huws

Monday 1st May 2017

By Ian Mitchelmore

Mick McCarthy has revealed he hopes to talk with Emyr Huws at the end of the season to discuss a potential permanent move from Cardiff City to Ipswich Town.

The Wales international joined the Tractor Boys on transfer deadline day in the most recent window having featured just four times for the Bluebirds this season.

Huws has impressed during his time at Portman Road, scoring three goals in his 12 appearances for the Suffolk-based side.

And the Ipswich boss plans to sit down with the Welshman after his side's final Championship game of the season against Nottingham Forest to discuss his future.

"I have got some difficult decisions to make with the squad but it’s no different to any other year," McCarthy told the club's official website.

"We have players out of contract. Some of those we have options on. We have players here on loan. Some we might want to try and keep.

"We will have some thoughts obviously but nothing will really be pushed on until the end of the season. We have some players under contract that it might be best for them and for us if they moved on as well.

"There is always change in the summer but change is a good thing. It’s an opportunity to freshen things up and then go again next season."

And speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times , the former Republic of Ireland manager said: "Toums (Toumani Diagouraga) has done well, as has Emyr (Huws).

"They helped steady the ship for a while and have both been good for us. I’ll talk to them (at the end of the season)."

Huws previously stated that he hopes to remain at Portman Road beyond the current campaign having struggled to force his way into Neil Warnock's plans.

"I’m not sure what’s going to happen at the minute, but I’d like to (stay here)," the 23-year-old said earlier this month.

"We’ve just been focusing on getting results and points, and that’s what we’ll continue to do until the end of the season before we go from there.

"I’ve been really enjoying my time here, the boys are top class.

"The staff and everyone else at the club are really welcoming and I’ve been really enjoying playing in this team, there’s real quality."

Never really been given a run in our team - its difficult to know how good he is ?

Really like his attitude.Took a pay drop in order to play regularly.Seems happy where he is and han't messed us about so would be happy to see a permanent deal go through. If only a few of our high earning bench warmers had his attitude they'd be playing regularly and our wage bill would benefit.Love of the game or love of the money.Don't get me wrong people have to make a living but I don't think any player at the club has to worry about the mortgage and leccie bill so then it turns into greed.

If they want him that bad then they can pay up and we make a profit or we give him a chance in our team.

Don't want to sound pedantic, but isn't this "tapping up". Surely Mick needs to speak to someone at the club first.

Can't remember what game it was but he didn't look intrested in the slightest. let him go and free up the wage bill for someone who cares for the badge :bluebird:

I think the deal was done before he went out on loan,if he impressed enough Ipswich would take him,and obviously he's done enough for McCarthy to come out with this, put it another way if he is at Cardiff at the start of next season you will have one unhappy player and one unhappy manager.

I can see us with 2 big athletic monsters in the middle of the park next season, not another languid footballer.

He's ok but there's far better out there. Why are we always clinging on to the past. It strikes me as lack of confidence.

He took a pay cut to get away from Cardiff City he never wanted to come here in the first place a terrible attitude good luck with Ipswich as against Fulham to prove he was good enough to Warnock and us he proved he didn't want to be here

It's hardly clinging on to the past mate, it's very much in the present. He's a footballer that's under contract with us for another few seasons who just gone out and done very well at a rival championship club, if he's good enough then why look elsewhere? Unless we can make a decent profit I say give him a chance.

There's better out there mate, we move on. Leave it to Warnock. Anyway the guy seems to be happy in East Anglia and who would blame him? A lovely part of the country

Good for him, and them. I hope he makes a success of it.

I wouldn't rush into anything. If Huddersfield go up there's a fair chance we'll get a pretty reasonable offer for him. Personally I think we're making a big mistake letting him go but if we were to get a good bi for him then fair enough. Ipswich wont be looking to pay a thing.

Agree I think we'll regret it

Neil Warnock and Mick McCarthy are big friends and it was this that saw Emyr Huw's go to Ipswich Town in the first place. No 'deal' was put in place, as Warnock simply wanted to get Huw's some game time and knew his 'mate' would look after him properly

The wages were an issue and 100% credit to Emyr Huw's on that one and IMHO he has reaped the rewards for an act of ambition rather than finance (unlike certain other players in the current City squad)

Nothing has been agreed on Emyr Huws departure from Cardiff City but talks are due, as they are with many other players either in the current squad or out on loan

For certain others, please note the lack of 'mention' of Idriss Saadi at any time during press conferences! ;)
