Aston Villa have reportedly identified Scotland international goalkeeper Allan McGregor as a potential summer transfer target, according to ClubCall.

The Championship side, who suffered a 3-1 defeat to Fulham on Monday in the English second-tier, have been linked with the Hull City shot stopper ahead of the 2017-18 campaign, if they fail to land Manchester United’s Sam Johnstone permanently.

The 35-year-old, who has 35 international caps for his country, has kept six clean sheets in 18 appearances whilst on loan at fellow Championship outfit Cardiff City following his arrival back in January.

McGregor, who has also played for the likes of Rangers and Besiktas, is a familiar face to Villans boss Steve Bruce, for whom he starred under last term at the KCOM Stadium.

But having fallen behind fellow ‘keepers Eldin Jakupovic and David Marshall at his parent club, the Scot’s future at Hull looks uncertain beyond the summer, hence Villa’s link with a permanent move for McGregor’s services.

However, the deal may only materialise if Bruce fails to lure United loanee Johnstone, 24, to the Midlands permanently, who has recorded seven shutouts in 19 games this campaign for Villa.

Mcgregor has done a very good job for us and there will be demand for him this summer.

His wages will be to high for us.

But I know he is very happy at Cardiff City :thumbright: :bluebird:

Steve Bruce eyeing shock move for former Aston Villa player

Steve Bruce is set to target Allan McGregor in the summer transfer window to help boost his hopes of returning to the Premier League next season, according to ClubCall.

The Scotland international used to play for the manager during his time at Hull City, however he has found his place hard-to-come by of late, forcing him to move to Championship rivals Cardiff City since the turn of the year on a short-term loan deal.

Villa have struggled in recent games to stop leaking goals, with two consecutive 3-1 defeats and have reportedly identified McGregor as the man that could help offer the reliability needed in between the sticks.

It is thought, however, Bruce will only go after the 35-year-old should he be unable to secure a permanent move for Manchester United loanee Sam Johnstone.

McGregor, who has kept six clean sheets in the 18 games he has played in for the Welsh side, has a wealth of experience that he can offer the Villans and help make them a force in the Championship next season.

Having already played for Bruce at the KCOM Stadium, the Scottish shot-stopper has also had spells at his native Glasgow Rangers, as well as a short time abroad for Turkish club Besiktas.

Should the move for Johnston fail to materialise, McGregor is an option the Midlands-based side can explore further and it is thought he will be able to move more freely after he has fallen behind Eldin Jakupovic and David Marshall in the Hull pecking order.

I honestly don't know, but my opinion would be about £25,000 plus a week.

Pity we can't keep him, Annis. He's playing regularly, and is back in the Scotland set-up. Warnock says that he's a good influence, not just on the pitch, but about the place generally. A good 'keeper is priceless. He didn't have a huge amount to do on Monday, but dealt comfortably with a few high balls into the box late in the game. McGregor, Murphy, and Wilson are a decent goalkeeping team.

Surely Mr Tan can see that people like McGregor and Manga would be pivotal for us next season.

I agree perfect goalie and we need a solid backbone to our team if we want to go up. :thumbright:

Tan is looking to cut the wage bill not increase it.

I like McGregor but not on the wages talked about above especially at 35.

that went so well last year. i know we got fees for both keepers but did we save any money at all on wages in the goalkeeper department ? Moore and Marshall out. amos, murphy, mcgregor in.?
i think all savings should be made on fringe players not the likes of McGregor and Manga who are regulars and contribute.

With clubs like Villa interested be very hard to see him drop a huge cut in wages if he knows he can still get big wages.

Manga wants To go regardless that was obvious in January when his agent started pimping him out in the media. As for McGregor 36 years of age next season will be looking for a payday/retirement package and I personally don't think he's worth that rather spend it looking at a young hungry keeper looking long term.

Am I the only one who thinks McGregor can be easily replaced? I don't recall him making any fantastic saves and we have conceded a number of goals from crosses going into the 6 yard box which a better, more commanding keeper would have dealt with in my opinion.

The Birmingham equaliser is one example, Joe Bennett was practically on the goal line trying to defend the inswinging cross before getting bundled (fairly) into the net with the ball. A better keeper would have come off his line to catch the cross, or at least punch the ball clear.

I don't think McGregor is worth the wages he's currently on and I think we can easily replace him with a better keeper on less wages.

Ross, I think bringing in McGregor when we did was a masterstroke by Neil Warnock, but I see your point and for next year it may be the case that here are others out there who can do a similar 'job' for less

I would be happy to see him stay for the right money, although personally I would like to see the return of David Marshall if the club are going to push the boat out on a class keeper :ayatollah:

Couple of saves spring to mind, the one v Ipswich on the counter.. one v Brentford.. despite going down 1-0 in these games they were still class saves, also one v Rotherham at 1-0.
