Trouble flared just two minutes into the game when a smoke bomb was hurled into the home end by visiting Blades supporters at Vale Park.

A group of Port Vale fans then tried to storm the away stand with unconfirmed reports suggesting a youngster was hit by the missile.

Staffordshire Police Commander Superintendent Carl Ratcliffe said: “It became apparent there were groups of people intent on being involved in disorder.

“Our priority was to ensure we disrupted the intentions of a minority with their minds set on causing trouble.”

Didn't exactly storm anything did they. Stood behind a row of stewards with a bit of pushing and shouting.

Port Vale and Sheffield United supporters clashed in and around Vale Park during the game, which also saw missiles thrown onto the pitch.

At least one flare was also thrown from the away stand inside the ground during the match, which saw Sheffield United win 3-0.

Two men were arrested by police for public order offences while a man was arrested on suspicion of assault on Newcastle Street in Burslem in a separate incident.

Police are also looking to speak to a man who threw a brick through the window of a coach as it left after the game.

Away fans were held back after the match and police and stewards formed lines to keep the two groups of supporters involved and prevent the disorder from getting worse.

Port Vale Supporters' club vice chairman Mark Porter said people needed to appreciate throwing flares could have serious consequences.

He said: "People should not be throwing flares, somebody could get seriously injured.

"People should think about their actions as they could have grave consequences and seriously hurt somebody.

"I think when there is trouble it ruins the day and what should be a game of football."

Superintendent Carl Ratcliffe, Commander of the Staffordshire Police operation said a minority of fans had caused disruption.

He said: "It became apparent there were groups of people intent on being involved in disorder.

"Our priority was to ensure we disrupted the intentions of a minority with their minds set on causing trouble."

Sheffield United fans also let off a flare inside a pub in Leek

Between six and seven hundred Sheffield United fans stopped in Leek on the way to the game, and a flare was set off in the Green Dragon pub, a Wetherspoon.

Supt. Ratcliffe added: "We appreciate the disruption this caused in the town and thank the local community for their patience and assistance."

One eyewitness in the market town said a vast majority of the supporters had been good natured and he felt a small minority of the travelling fans were to blame.

He said: "A majority were fine and we had the usual banter with them – but someone let off a flare and fire crackers in Wetherspoon.
