Leicester City fans arrested for 'causing a mess'

BBC

12/04/17

Reports of Leicester City fans clashing with Madrid police
Spanish police have said eight Leicester City fans were arrested for "causing a mess" ahead of their Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid.

The fans remain in custody following clashes with police on Tuesday evening and will appear in court on Thursday.

Police said six officers were also attacked in the disturbances.

BBC journalist Phil Mackie said he witnessed what appeared to be an unprovoked attack from officers.

He said he met supporters who had been left bruised after being hit on the head, arms and knees.

BBC correspondent Phil Mackie said he saw some fans pushed to the floor and hit with batons
The correspondent told 5 live the trouble happened in the Plaza Mayor, where Foxes fans had been told they could gather.

He said he found a number of young Leicester fans with bruises, who had been hit on the head, arms and knees and while some were drunk, they seemed dazed as well.

He witnessed police charging a group of Leicester fans who seemed to be just walking past and three were pushed to the ground, hit with batons and bundled into the back of vans.

Blue line
Aaron Richard Howells, who was in the square, said there was a lot of good-natured singing from supporters, but some younger fans got too close to police with their chanting.

He said: "We [witnessed] police targeting groups of people, smashing beers from tables and even them throwing chairs towards the fans as well charging with batons and riot shields."

However, supporter June Webb - who was in the square - said some ticketless fans told her they liked to make a nuisance of themselves and "expected trouble later".

A spokesman for Leicester City said: "We have received reports from local police of a small number of arrests following minor incidents in Madrid on Tuesday evening.

Spanish Police are brutal. Know-one likes the British footie fans abroad, Wales fans are no strangers to causing mayhem in countries like Germany/Italy and Belgium etc, and Cardiff fans had to be cleared from the streets with water cannons in Liege. Brits abroad a :occasion5: :bluebird:

Clowns like you are part of the reason people voted for Brexit, how do you think an independent Wales would do in the EU.

Spanish Police have a long history of indiscriminately attacking football fans, had the people being battoned been economic migrants the social justice warriors would be screaming police brutality but working class football fans are fair game, because in your deluded mind they all voted Brexit. Instead of isolating the trouble makers the Guardia Civil (Francos favourites) just lash out at anyone.

Jock your 100% correct here, Spanish Police are brutal. Some on here have short memories, Wales fans caused mayhem in Milan vs Italy, in Nuremberg vs Germany and in Brussels twice vs Belgium, and Cardiff fans had water cannons turned on them away to Standard Liege. Glass houses springs to mind :bluebird:

All clubs have an element who get out of hand but it's no excuse for bad policing, Rangers Fans have often been battered by the Spanish police for very little, yet in Amsterdam I saw a group of several hundred marching through the Red Light District, one guy who was a bit pissed climbed some scaffolding and was taunting the Police who were telling him to come down, when he eventually reached the ground a big Dutch copper clipped him on the back of the head, like a naughty schoolboy, everybody laughed and what could have easily escalated was defused. Had he been in Spain the Police would have beat the shite out of him.

I usually respect your opinions but have you read the reports fully? It appears not!

Some (apparent) Leicester fans have caused quite a few issues out there, in line with previous English football fans. The Spanish police were prepared for it and reacted in a way that is all that some understand

Here's just one report (and there are images to support):

Objects were thrown at the officers and fans chanted "You Spanish b******s"

Videos also emerged online of the police hitting Leicester fans to the ground

The supporters were in good spirits earlier in the day in Plaza Mayor, enjoying the warm sunshine and refreshments in Madrid.

I don't doubt for a minute some of Leicesters fans were at it but my point is the Spanish Plod steam into everyone, I watched a guy in his late 60s early 70s get battered by them, perhaps he was singing about Gibraltar ;) perhaps German and Dutch Police deal with British fans better because culturally we are more similar.............all pissheads

I agree with the 'random' element but where does it stop with fans and their "We'll do what we want" culture? This 'lads' culture is beyond and other nations are not prepared to put up with it, so they clamp down strongly. No wisdom is realising that, as it's been the same in those countries for many a year :thumbright:

You're right about the Dutch and Germans! Love both those places (do Assen and the Nurburgring frequently) and always made to feel welcome by mean hosts! :ayatollah:

I've never been to a game in Spain but the football police are known for being a bit OTT. There was problems when Bolton played Athletico Madrid a few years back. As for people thinking a Gibraltar is ours chant is offensive to locals? I doubt very few people in Madrid give a rats arse about Gibraltar.

Imagine if a group of foreigners congregated in a square in London and started throwing things around singing provocative songs about the country they were in. Lets imagine they were Muslim or Irish, there is no way in hell you would criticise the police for steaming in, you would support it and probably want them all rounded up and beaten. The Spanish police saw a bunch of fat tatooed English oiks taking the piss in their city and sorted them out. I wish our police were more like that at times.

You sound like a liberal softy snowflake you absolute weapon.
