Whitts is 33 in September so in my opinion this is as big a decision for him as it is for the club as it probably will be the final contract of his career.

By Gary Field aka Castleblue

Whitts has passed the maximum earning period of his career and whatever happens it is highly unlikely he will get a contract like his current one, although during these times of austerity it probably will be possible to get a better one elsewhere. We should remember that Whitts, as a free transfer, would be a fantastic signing for the majority of Championship teams, even at 33.

These days Whitts is no more than a luxury player and dead ball specialist. Might suit someone like Derby to sit on the bench and make a few first team appearances now and again to offer them something different?

He was a "luxury player" that won the last match for us. I hope he stays with a new 2 year contract.

Really hope he stays on sensible wages,a big asset for next season even if a squad player.

Will be gutted if he leaves, defending deserves another two year contract, as he's still got a lot to offer. Obviously on reduced terms though.

I am glad you brought this subject up, because we never seem to talk about this. ;)

To put that into context he won one of 46 league games :D PaulMillar is right he is a luxury player and in some ways has been for years. Annis had been pushing for a contract of £10kpw but the other day downgraded that to £7kpw.

For once I agree with him. At that price he is worth keeping with a view to coaching in the future as suggested by the article's author.

he didn't actually win the game himself though did he...he was part of an all round improved 2nd half team performance !!!

What had he contributed in the previous 10 games???? Sorry but I disagree but he has not warranted a 2 year new contract

I agree with you for once on this one Llan  it's been done to death. Only Warnock and the player (and agent) will decide what happens. One thing's for sure, 50% of the fan base will be happy with the outcome and the other 50% will be disappointed. He's a Marmite player. C'est la vie.

If people want a team of oldies but goldies Paul I wonder if we could coax Phil Dwyer and Toshack back? On reduced terms of course

Whitts has not appeared that much during the last 10 matches but where he has appeared and played 70+ minutes (6 games), we have won 13 of the 18 points available. In those games he has scored 2 goals, had 2 assists and 3 key passes which resulted in goals. In 2 matches he was a 90th minute substitute (Brighton & Reading) both lost by the odd goal, 32 minutes in the draw with Birmingham and 27 minutes in the defeat at Wolves. He is also having his best goal scoring season since 2012/13.

All of that, in my opinion, highlights just how important Whitts still is to our team and why he is absolutely worthy of a new contract with a sensible salary.

Contributed to the most goals out of all players, him and Zohore both contributed to 14 in terms of goals and assists, I said this in other threads and people are incredibly delusional.. You got midfielders like Ralls, Gunnarsson, Harris, Pilkington who haven't contributed near that amount.

Agreed !!

Why is it that people simply can't see that Whitts contributes more in terms of goals and assists than players like Ralls and Pilks ??

Nobody, including Whitts, thinks he should stay on the same money but don't doubt his contribution because the facts clearly demonstrate he is still more effective than the majority of our midfielders, if not all.

Two good posts.
Can still be a big player and a huge influence for us next season even if it's not every game. Warnock is savvy enough to know which games and when to play him.
