Peter Whittingham named as the ONLY Cardiff City player in Football League's top 50
Monday 10th April 2017
The long-serving midfielder is the only Bluebirds player included in the list of 50 best Football League players
His Cardiff City days may be numbered, but there are no shortage of Peter Whittingham fans in South Wales.
Bluebirds' supporters have taken him to their hearts in 10 years of loyal midfield service... and it seems Whittingham is still the stand-out Cardiff player, judging on a recent vote.
Acclaimed magazine FourFourTwo asked its readers to vote for the top 50 Football League players. They polled fans of every club, from Newcastle United to Newport County, to try and find the players worthy of inclusion in the annual list with the hashtag #FLTOP50.
And never mind the form of Kenneth Zohore, nor the consistency of Aron Gunnarsson or Sol Bamba, it was Whittingham who came 42nd in the list — and the only Bluebirds player mentioned.
The magazine wrote — perhaps erroneously — that an extension of Whittingham's control is "reported to be a formality" but the 32-year-old is one of just six players over the age of 30 included in the list.
Only Norwich City midfielder Wes Hoolahan was older than Whittingham.
Brighton winger Anthony Knockaert was voted No.1 in the list, with Dwight Gayle, Jonjo Shelvey, Tom Cairney and Chris Wood completing the top five.
Whittingham's future at Cardiff City Stadium remains in serious doubt.
But with a superb display against Brentford , coupled with high praise from captain Sean Morrison , as well as this particular revelation, there might just be a few flickers of hope for the Bluebirds stalwart.

No surprise 7 goals and 7 assists this season, Joint top with Zohore in contribution to most goals with 14.
I hope he signs the new contract despite the wages being completely wrong.
Isn't he on 95 or 96 goals for us after the weekend? Closing in on 100.

No surprise to me.
A class player who is still class as Saturday proved.
Can still do a valuable job and should be re-signed albeit on a reduced wage.

Tony, it does seem odd but the article does hint that some selections are little out of kilter
I'm a big Whitts fan, so it pleased me to see it in the face of some short-memories comments in recent times by people on here. Whitts has always put in a shift in a City shirt and is still better than a lot we have. If we can come to a sensible agreement, I agree with Paul (OriginalGrangendBlue) and believe he should stay here and finish his career before going into coaching (possibly at the CCS)

Not everyone. PW deserves to be on that list and probably a lot higher. But we can't ignore the fact he is definitely past his best and has had a tendency to 'go missing' in the past.
I will definitely attend his testimonial and will always consider him a Cardiff City great, but his time for big buck contracts has passed.
