" PETER WHITTINGHAMS NEW CONTRACT? "

Peter Whittingham was given a new contact when Cardiff City gained promotion to the Premier League and the rise from was believed to be as big as up to £25,000 a week.

Peter Whittingham is nearly 33 years old and for the last two years has been in and out of the Cardiff City team.

Whitts contacts runs out this June,Whitts was offered a new contact a few months back and it is believed it was approx £10,000 a week with bonuses etc depending on the amount of appearances etc.

Whitts never signed the new contract and a couple of months later the contract was withdrawn for now.

Neil Warnock only has a small budget for the 2017-18 season,so Warnock is limited in what he can offer and also how much Warnock himself rates Whittingham.

http://www.annisabraham.co.uk/2017/04/1 ... -decision/ :bluebird:

But on Saturday Whittingham against Brentford gave one of his best performances of the season.

Peter Whittingham cast a nice shadow over Cardiff City Stadium again on Saturday and his movements and the precision of his passing – for a while it came flooding back and Whitts looked pure class.

For many Cardiff City supporters, his performance evoked memories of years gone by. The class Whittingham years returned.

The big question is,can Whittingham play consistently to that level every week and thus be involved in Neil Warnock’s ambitious bid for promotion next season?

Neil Warnock says he already has 90% of his plans in place for a potential promotion push next season.

NEIL WARNOCK:

"We had discussions and couldn't quite reach an agreement," said Warnock on March 31st this year.

"We've spoken to Peter about a compromised contract and until I know the figures I don't know what we can offer."

"We will speak again after I have my full budget in place"

SO WHAT DOES NEIL WARNOK DO?

OFFER MORE & USE UP MORE OF HIS BUDGET?

OR OFFER WHAT HE ALREADY OFFERED WHITTS?

One good 45 minutes against a team with nothing to play for ???

We all know Whitts was a class player in his prime but that was 4/5 years ago.

He hasn't done anywhere near enough this season to warrant a 10k a week (520,000 per year) plus bonuses contract.

Given the space and time he can still perform at this level...but do you honestly believe opposition players are going to give him as much time and room has he had on Saturday in a more competitive and meaningful match next season???

He just hasn't got the legs anymore...time to say goodbye with our thanks for 10 great years

I think that report slightly over eggs the performance. Played well but hardly a £25kpw one.

If we don't offer him a new contract, there'll be plenty of championship clubs queuing up for his signature with bigger contracts.

IMO definitely worth a £10K contract. Still a class player and has plenty more to give as proved on Saturday. If a player of Whitts calibre becomes available in the summer, most City fans would be wetting themselves over signing him up.

At 33 ten grand is a good salary, he should be offered a coaching position along side Bellamy

In that unlikely scenario I think we should let them take him then. I think most fans would be wetting themselves if a player who can offer more than Whittingham can became available and younger too. There was evidence of that in the Brentford midfield on Saturday. I'd be disappointed if Warnock offers him even £10k a week.

Any statos out there?
Just wondering how many points we have gained when Whitts has started under Warnock and also how many have we gained when Whitts has not started under Warnock.
I have no idea myself just curios.
I would, myself, try and keep Whitts, I still think he can do a job for us.

It obviously all comes down to the size of budget we're able to have. For me it's a no brainier, if the money is there then we give him a contract. His days of playing week in week out are coming to an end but Saturdays second half performance reiterated how useful he can still be for us, if used correctly. He just oozes class.

It's a 'no brainer' that the budget doesn't exist to pay players money they are not worth. If any good is to come out of the Lambert saga then it's a collective 'no more of those contracts' to aging players who can't deliver consistently anymore.

Re: ' NEIL WARNOCK A MASSIVE DECISION? ? '

Peter Whittingham was NOT given a new contract when we won promotion.
he signed a 3 year contract at end of Malkys first year. then 2 years later AFTER being relegated he signed a new 3 year contract.
absolutely love the i would pay him this much or that much. surely to come up with a figure you should at least know what all our other players are on to make a reasonable assesment regarding value for money.

i love watching Whitts ,certainly dont think we built a team around him though. but dont expect to see him here next season.

I don't think he will stay, I don't blame him or the club though. He can get more money elsewhere and we don't want to be paying big wages for someone who will be mostly a sub.

I wish him well but its time to move on.

agree. as much as i like watching him,i doubt he will play a lot .id prefer what ever money is there is spent on someone the manager wants.

Re: ' NEIL WARNOCK A MASSIVE DECISION? ? '

Mon Apr 10, 2017 12:11 pm

I don't think its a massive decision for him. Warnock doesn't need Whitts, we are a counter attacking team not an oppressional, set play, anti footballing team like Malkys.

We don't need possession or control the tempo of the game. Long ball out, win second ball, get in into the space on the flanks. Lose the second ball chase and tackle to retrieve it.

One of the new players needs to be a dead ball specialist, they may not be as good as Whitts (pretty doubtfull) but a lot better than any of our current lot.

I see a lot of posts about that ginger small kid for Brentford. Can you see anything but a converted centre half or an out and out defensive midfielder (have to be foreign because we don't produce them in this country) sitting in front of the back four. All those little clever, neat, inter passing in your own last third probably gives our Neil convulsions. "Get it forward mun"

Whitts has been at the wrong club to be full appreciated, not a downer, but we are a up and at them sort of fan base. He would probably be more lauded further west, where they like the game played a bit different from us.

I would have always said Dave Bennett was my favourite city player, but when he moves on, I'll probably appreciate our Pete even more.

I normally hate all that retiring jersey numbers, but we need to do something special for number seven........

Re: ' NEIL WARNOCK A MASSIVE DECISION? ? '

Mon Apr 10, 2017 12:56 pm

Whitts is 33 in September so in my opinion this is as big a decision for him as it is for the club as it probably will be the final contract of his career. We are most likely talking about a contract of no more than 2 years so would he want to move just for money, would he like a contract that will include helping him with coaching qualifications and would he be guaranteed a starting role at any club he moves to.

Whitts has passed the maximum earning period of his career and whatever happens it is highly unlikely he will get a contract like his current one, although during these times of austerity it probably will be possible to get a better one elsewhere. We should remember that Whitts, as a free transfer, would be a fantastic signing for the majority of Championship teams, even at 33.

Whitts still has the highest number of assists of any player in Championship history, only two players (MacCormack & Rhodes) have scored more Championship goals than him and he has scored more penalties than any other player in Championship history. Even this season he has most assists at our club and only two players have scored more goals and if you include key passes he is in a league of his own this season so he still makes a massive contribution.

In my opinion he can continue to make a big contribution to our future, but not as a guaranteed starter and I hope both parties can agree a sensible contract and he can continue to the end of his career as a Bluebird.

Gary, great post

Whitts has no real desire to leave either the club or his home in Penarth (he has openly said that) at this point in his career and wants to stay. He loves the area and the people

Trouble is that the club know Whitts wants to stay, which (sort of) puts them in a winning position during negotiations

Next season he will be another year older and now is the time to move him for me.

Fantastic player ,but he needs to stay on a reduced salary.
Another who has deservedly earned his corn ,but the gravy train is over.
The goal at Middlesbrough's in the cup was world class and probably one of a few who have been capable of scoring just that type of goal.
Legend.
