Sol Bamba’s injury is likely to rule him out for the remainder of the season.

Lambert travelling, but not starting.

Lee Peltier will be on subs bench.

Joe Bennett starting.

Neil Warnock:

"We’ve assessed Bamba and I think he’ll be out for the season now. Only chance will be the last couple of games."

The physio saw his groin problem and at first we thought it might be months, but it’s better than we thought. Unlikely that he’ll play again this season.

Warnock on Lee Peltier

"Peltier is training really well and I’m toying with the idea of using him tomorrow.
But I just don’t want to risk anything."
"He had an operation and one large bit of bone was removed, but it’s good to see him back.
He’ll definitely be available for Monday if not tomorrow."

Cardiff City striker Rickie Lambert is back in the fold having made the bench last weekend, but the Bluebirds will be without long-term absentees Lee Peltier and Rhys Healey.

Sheffield Wednesday Football Club is a professional association football club based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The team competes in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. Formed as an offshoot of The Wednesday Cricket Club in 1867, they went by the name of The Wednesday Football Club until changing to their current name in 1929.

Wednesday are one of the oldest football clubs in the world of any code, and the third oldest professional association football club behind Notts County and Nottingham Forest, excluding clubs with informal or disputed foundation dates. In 1868 they won the Cromwell Cup, only the second tournament of its kind, and in 1877 they won the inaugural Sheffield Challenge Cup, the oldest County Cup in England. They were founding members (and inaugural champions) of the Football Alliance in 1889, before joining The Football League three years later. In 1992 they became founder members of the Premier League. The club has spent most of its league history in English football's top flight, but they have not played at that level since being relegated in 2000.

The Owls, as they are nicknamed, have won four League titles, three FA Cup’s and one League Cup. Wednesday have also competed in UEFA cup competitions on four occasions, reaching the quarter-finals of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1963.

Since 1899 the club has played its home matches at Hillsborough stadium in the north-west Sheffield suburb of Owlerton.

History and description

Sheffield Wednesday moved to Hillsborough Stadium in 1899. They played their first match at their new ground on the 2nd of September 1899 against Chesterfield (5-1). At that time, the stadium was still called Owlerton Stadium.

The stadium underwent a series of developments in 1913, including the construction of a new main stand and expansions of the terraces. At completion of the works in 1914, the stadium got renamed Hillsborough.

Hillsborough achieved its record attendance in 1934 when 72,841 people attended an FA Cup match between Wednesday and Manchester City.

In the early 1960s, a new North Stand was built, the second in England with a cantilever roof. In subsequent years further improvements were made to the Leppings Lane End and North West Corner.

Hillsborough was selected as one of the playing venues of the 1966 World Cup, during which it hosted three group matches and the quarter-final between West Germany and Uruguay (4-0).

Few changes were made to the stadium in the following decades, and its state slowly deteriorated. The only noticeable change was the construction of a roof over the Kop in 1986.

In 1989, the stadium was the scene of a stadium disaster that cost the lives of 96 Liverpool fans. The fans died in a crush caused by a combination of poor crowd management, police control, and, to a lesser extent, inadequate safety measures.

The subsequent investigation into the causes of the disaster, chaired by Lord Justice Taylor, resulted in the Taylor report. Its recommendations led to, among others, the conversion of all English stadiums into all-seaters and the removal of perimeter fences.

In the early 1990s, Hillsborough too got converted into an all-seater, and in 1996 it was one of the playing venues during the Euro 1996 tournament. The stadium hosted three group matches.

On form should be an Owls win, but I have not forgiven them for that 1-0 when we just missed out on the playoffs. I couldn't go, listen to radio as I was at a family celebration that I couldn't avoid. Needless to say I was doing much celebrating that afternoon.

The Bluebirds travel to Hillsborough to take on play-off chasing Sheffield Wednesday on Good Friday.

Cardiff City look to continue their chase for a top-half finish against a Sheffield Wednesday side looking to secure a spot in the Championship play-offs.

Neil Warnock’s men head into this one on the back of a 2-1 win over in-form Brentford last weekend, coming from behind to take all three points.

And Sheffield Wednesday also head into Good Friday with a good feeling after beating title-chasing Newcastle United in front of a packed out Hillsborough last weekend.

The win took the Owls back into the top six, two points clear of Fulham who are desperately keeping up the chase to secure a play-off spot.

When the two teams met earlier this season, they couldn’t be separated with Wednesday scoring a second half equaliser to come away with a 1-1 draw.

Wednesday and Cardiff shared a play-off bid last season and it was the Yorkshire club who came out on top, defeating the Bluebirds 3-0 at home in the penultimate game of the season to secure their spot in the top six.

The fixture spells a return to Sheffield for Neil Warnock, however, having grown up supporting and then managing Sheffield United, he’s not well received in the blue half of Steel City.

Warnock will be hoping to get one over on his rivals, but it won’t be easy – the two teams have drawn three of their last five meetings, both sides taking a win each.

Cardiff City striker Rickie Lambert is back in the fold having made the bench last weekend, but the Bluebirds will be without long-term absentees Lee Peltier and Rhys Healey.

Lee Peltier has returned to training following an ankle operation but he won’t be risked until the last game or two of the season or even might have to wait for next seasons pre-season friendlies.

Sheffield Wednesday: Our best is still to come insists Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal Carlos Carvalhal

Sheffield Telegraph

BY DOM HOWSON

Thursday 13 April 2017

Carlos Carvalhal claims there is still more to come from his Owls side as they prepare to take on Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City side. Sixth-placed Wednesday entertain the Bluebirds tomorrow searching for a third Championship victory in a row.

The Owls are two points clear of nearest rivals Fulham with five matches remaining in the race to confirm a play-off place but Carvalhal is refusing to get carried away.

He said: “The quality is better. We have more confidence with the wins. I think we can do better in the future. “We have expectations to recover [Fernando] Forestieri and Kieran Lee this month. Let’s see Sam Hutchinson also."

"When we have everyone back fit and together, we will be more strong.” Forestieri is pushing for a start against Cardiff, having been an unused substitute versus Newcastle United, but Hutchinson (calf) is still a big doubt. Lee is unlikely to be involved. In recent months"

Carvalhal thinks Wednesday have missed players such as Gary Hooper, Lee and Forestieri who orchestrate the offensive part of their game.

He took in 30 matches in 2015-16 and in those games, across all competitions and football divisions, he handed out a total of 111 yellow cards and five red cards.

He was most card happy in the match between Ipswich Town and Cardiff City in October with eight yellows being shown. He also showed six yellows and two reds on two occasions.

Coote, a former Select Group assistant referee, Coote was appointed as an EFL referee in 2010. NEIL WARNOCK:

'Lambert is fit, but I'm not picking him'

"Rickie is available for selection, but I’m not picking him. Kenneth Zohore has solved problems and I dread to think where we’d be without Ken."

"The turnaround in his performances have been incredible. Whether Ken can maintain that next season, we don’t know.
But at the moment, it’s his (Zohore) shirt and I don’t see anybody taking it off him. Rickie is training well and we didn’t use him last weekend, I wanted someone to run into the channels so I put Pilkington on."

"Rickie will be in the squad tomorrow."

Rickie Lambert currently on £25,000 plus a week.

Neil Warnock on Sheffield Wednesday

NEIL WARNOCK:

"I always get a nice warm welcome and that spurs me on. We’ve always had that rivalry in Sheffield and it’s healthy, there’s nothing wrong with it. Just good camaraderie between the two clubs."

"It’s been good to see Sheffield United back in the Championship and Blades fans will want a local derby next year - so they’ll be cheering me on."

"Wednesday spent more on one player in January than we’ve spent. It’s a great atmosphere and I‘ve got a lot of time for Carlos.
I’ve got a sneaky feeling whichever of Sheffield Wednesday or Fulham get in the play-offs could go all the way."

Re: LATEST NEWS : SHEFF W v CARDIFF CITY UPDATED DAILY

More on this weekend's match

NEIL WARNOCK:

"We’ll be under the cosh quite a lot and with the team they’ve got and a full house. We’ll have to stand up.
If we play like we did at Wolves, we’ll get smashed."

Flicker of a chance

Cardiff are almost in...

Joe Ralls drives in a shot that hits goalkeeper Westwood and Kenneth Zohore tries to follow in. The flag goes up for offside.

Re: TEAM NEWS : SHEFF W v CARDIFF CITY MATCH THREAD

Fri Apr 14, 2017 2:23 pm

Shape

Looks like Reach joining Hooper and Fletcher in a front three for Wednesday.

Wallace pushing on from midfield, with Jones and Bannan sitting.

Re: TEAM NEWS : SHEFF W v CARDIFF CITY MATCH THREAD

Fri Apr 14, 2017 2:27 pm

Clattered

Hoilett nicks the ball off Westwood and keeps it alive.

The Canadian isn’t penalised as the keeper stays down. No free kick, just a throw-in. Cardiff kick it back to the Owls’ gloveman.

Re: TEAM NEWS : SHEFF W v CARDIFF CITY MATCH THREAD

Fri Apr 14, 2017 2:30 pm

No rhythm

No real flow to the game, as Richards lifts in a free kick but Morrison is penalised for a push in the box.

Wednesday look to push forward again.

Hoilett in trouble?

Hoilett could go here. Carvalhal is going ballistic. Looked like a potential elbow or push from the winger.

It’s scoreless at the break, despite Cardiff finishing with a corner that was nodded to safety. Much to ponder.
