Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock reveals how Kevin Blackwell gave him 'a kick up the backside' to inspire victory

Saturday 8th April 2017

Neil Warnock admitted a sluggish first half performance from Cardiff City against Brentford was symptomatic of the complacency which has affected everyone at the club in recent weeks.

But the boss was quick to laud his players' second half intensity - and a "kick up the backside" from Kevin Blackwell - that spurred the Bluebirds into life.

And Warnock admitted the low-key opening 45 minutes didn't at all surprise him.

"The first half might have epitomised myself," he said.

"It's very difficult for me to get myself up for it when I know we're safe. I need an edge on my game as well.

"So I said to Blackie (Kevin Blackwell), 'make sure you give me a kick up the backside if you think I'm slacking'.

"Because it's easy to become complacent really and I've never been one for pre-season friendlies because there's nothing at stake."

Warnock's half time team talk clearly worked wonders, as Morrison nodded home Whittingham's corner two minutes after the restart.

The Bluebirds were then dominant after the break, with midfield stalwart Whittingham controlling the tempo of the game

"All credit to the lads for taking on board what I said and making a game of it," added Warnock, who was keen to entertain the paying Cardiff faithful who gave Whittingham - and the rest of the team - a standing ovation for their efforts.

"It's easy to go through the motions and then the fans are paying their money and not getting their money's worth," he added.

"But I want fans to go home and talk about the goals and the saves. We're in an entertainment business.

"I appreciate the fans staying behind and giving the players applause. Because it was a hot, draining day."

Although Warnock as Manager usually gets all the praise...it pretty obvious that his lieutenants Blackwell and Fenton play a huge part behind the scenes.Add Bellamy onto the list and it's a pretty formidable non nonsense team!!!!
