' CARDIFF CITY WILL HAVE TO HAVE ONE CLUB DEVELOPED PLAYER IN FUTURE MATCH DAY SQUADS '

It is hoped the changes will help academy players secure first team football with their clubs

Thursday 6th April

Cardiff City will have to name at least one club developed player in their matchday squads from the 2018/19 campaign following new rules introduced by the English Football League (EFL).

The EFL have today announced radical changes in a bid to improve chances for young players at football clubs.

And part of those plans include making the 72 Football League clubs select at least one club developed player in each matchday squad from the start of the 2018/19 season.

A club developed player is someone who has been registered to a club for at least a year prior to the end of their under-19 season.

Cardiff youngster Declan John is a product of the club's youth academy
Part of the changes also mean clubs will have to include an additional home-grown player in their matchday squads as of next season, with sides currently having to include six such players in their match squads.

Home-grown players are those who have been registered with a club in Wales or England for three season, or 36 months before their 21st birthday.

The changes were agreed by all 72 of the Football League clubs at a meeting in February and it is hoped they will help academy players make the transition to first-team football, according to EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey.

He said: "I hope this latest commitment made by our clubs is further evidence of the EFL taking the initiative in looking for practical and effective measures that can be introduced to help managers and coaches in the ongoing development of young players.

"It is imperative that we provide young players not only with a platform, but also with the belief that opportunities will be made available to progress from youth to senior football.

"I am confident that this decision will have a positive and lasting impact on the future of football in this country."

At first I thought it said the squad and I thought it's hardly a major change. But then noticed they would have to be in the match day squad so that implies that you'd need a few in the full squad in case of injuries surely?

its a joke really, smaller clubs always play their academy players, and 1 of 2 things happen

1) they get fined for fielding a "weaken" team
2) a premier league comes in for them, paying nothing because of the rules the FA. have set in place regarding academies.

if you want to promote better youth, stop fining teams for playing kids, make it so the club have a final say on how much an academy player gets sold for, and finally stop premier league big boys from hoarding the youngsters only to never give them first team football, and then release them

no Nubbsy
the penalty for not naming a home developed player is you lose a sub .and have 6 instead of 7 to choose from.
infact the rule could be reworded to .your allowed 6 subs but can have an extra 7th sub if your fortunate enough to have a home developed player good enough to make the squad.
i dont see this rule as a bad thing by any means, but very little is going to change.

Spot on rule change means nothing unless the rest is changed.

'New EFL rules won't change much'

Just a reminder that, as of next season, clubs will have to name at least one ‘club developed’ player in matchday squads.

NEIL WARNOCK:

“I don’t think it’ll change anything.
“If they haven’t got one good enough they’ll put one in the squad. You’ve just got to concentrate on your squad and try to get one into the team.
“I don’t look that far ahead but I don’t think it’ll change that much.
“Jamie (academy manager) and Craig’s been there to help out. It’s his enthusiasm we love.
“He’s full of it, no matter what age group. I imagine they’ll be very proud when they see members make the first team.
“I think there’s one or two promising lads in the 16s and 18s. We’ve talked about that.
“We’ll be playing a lot of our under-18s in the under-23s next season.
“I think the 18s would gain something from that.”

be nice to have a local player in the team,i think fans of all clubs want that, but only if they are good enough.
