Coming from the US for the Brentford match - Help Needed!

Sat Apr 01, 2017 5:44 pm

I am an American with Welsh roots who has been supporting the City for more than 20 years now. Throughout that roller coaster ride, I have never made it to Cardiff to see a match. That is going to change next week as my brother, father, and I are making the pilgrimage from the US to the CCS for the Brentford match.

Having been a daily visitor but very infrequent poster to this site, I have picked up a few ideas for game day experiences over the years, but I am obviously no expert. I am hoping that some of you might read this and share some ideas on how to make our trip the most authentic and amazing experience as possible.

I have already purchased 3 tickets in section 104 Row I, but would love to know where to go and what to do before and after the match. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance!

Surprised nobody' has posted on this as a lot of fans take the time to post about any feelings about a bad performance. Anyhow, depends what your after and where you are staying. It's a low key game with nothing to play for, but that's not to take away from your first experience. I would head in to the city centre for a full Welsh breakfast and pint to kick your morning off, then head to the Cornwall walking distance which is in grangetown when you walk from the city towards the ground.

You can leave the Cornwall twenty to twenty five minutes before ko and still have time to spare before kick off. Hope you have a good experience Usa bluebird.

Hi Chris well done for coming to see the mighty Bluebirds in action.

Are you staying in the City Centre? If so the ground is about a 30 min walk away. So you could have breakfast or lunch before the game and head up into the Canton area before hand and have a few Welsh beers before then walking the 15 min walk to the ground. There is a pub outside the ground but you have to buy a meal if you want to drink in this particular pub.

I believe there is also a Ccfc history show going on at the city library at the moment which may interest you.

I'm sure if you could tell us a little more we could offer some more detailed advice.

Even though it will be a low key match due to both teams having little to play for enjoy your day in our Capital City and well done for having the love for CCFC The Bluebirds :bluescarf: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Hi Chris, yes the Cornwall would be a good shout. Great atmosphere before the game and you would enjoy some fun banter and a tidy pint :ayatollah:

Depends what you want Chris, if you like a few beers I would get into town early and have breakfast and a few pints in Kiwis, POW, O'Neils, You have Spurs/Watford on the early game so I would watch the first half of that in one of the aforementioned pubs and then get a taxi either down to the Cornwall (Grangetown) or go into Canton, be about half 1 by then and there will be plenty of people about as the crowds/atmosphere builds up.

As mentioned above, sadly its a bit of a nothing game so its unlikely to be a 'fantastic' atmosphere but hopefully still decent and you will get to see some goals.

Enjoy your trip mate and let us know how you get on

Thanks so much for the advice! We are staying near the Pontcanna area. Despite this being a mid-table match this late in the season, many of my in-laws are Brentford supporters from Chiswick, so there are some bragging rights on the line family-wise.

Definitely up for a few (or several) pints before the game. :occasion5: If you think of anything else in the meantime, I am grateful for any advice you could pass my way. Thanks again, and if you see 3 Americans wandering around town next week, be sure to say hi! :ayatollah:

No need to worry if we lose. It won't be because we were beaten by a better team, it will be the refs fault. Guarantee it. ;)

so plenty of cafes on Pontcanna Street for your breakfast. As another poster has said, Chapter is on your way-ish for a few pints, though still a 20 minute walk to your seat. Corporation or Canton Vaults are a bit nearer the ground and on your way, as are the Butchers and the Canton, both on Llandaff Road.

Alternative food - Saffron café on Cowbridge Road is where we go for pre-match food, cheap and fast, decent.

Top tip: don't do what other US tourists do over here, and remark how "English" the accent is :( :banghead:

Enjoy your day chief :occasion5: :bluebird: :bluescarf:

Don't worry, I called but he said he can't make it. Too busy alienating most of the country and the rest of the known universe. :banghead:
