This is what Warnock has said about talks with Whittingham...
NEIL WARNOCK:
"We had discussions and couldn’t quite reach an agreement. We had a FFP meeting and we should hear about that next week. We’ve looked at players out of contract, those out on loan and we should know more about the figures in the next 10 days.
We’ve spoken to Peter about a compromised contract and until I know the figures I don’t know what we can offer."

I hope the club is respectful in offering their terms but I also hope Whittingham appreciates he's not at his peak any more and, naturally, unless his performances improve then he'll have to expect to take a pay cut with each contract he signs as he gets older. Would be a shame to see him go but he knows the business he is in.

I am not concerned if Whitts, Manga or Harris don't stay it's about time the Club dictate things instead of players.
If they want to develop and get better then they should stay but as we all know it's about the money.
About time the players realised what supporters are about and the sacrifices they make to follow the club whatever the cost.
At last there is a feel good factor around the club and I for one will enjoy this years summer break for once!

Whitts has been a great servant to the club but no doubt he has been very well paid by the club in that time.
It seems to be the offer we are making is a gesture because of his service at the club. From what ive seen he just doesn't fit into NW plans or his system and will be leaving and I think that is the right decision. Offering him a contract just for sentimental reasons is in no ones best interests. Its time for him to move on.

I think it's clear it's time to part ways, he's been a hero, but you can't slot a round shape into a square space, so for his career and our progression it's time for Whitts to move over.
Brutal and honest

Agreed Chief I would personally like him to stay but he isn't worth his current wages no where near. I would say a cut of 3/4 would be about right.nharsh but fair.

Great over tge years but sadly his besr days are behind him

Time to go I think. We've got a top notch manager with big ambition and clearly Whittingham is peripheral to his plans. We need to move into a new and exciting era and I would have thought, apart from the money, the player wouldn't relish the prospect of warming the bench for a whole season when he might get more regular football somewhere else. A Whexit might suit all parties.

id die to earn half his wages, I work 40 hours a week on a building site, wind, rain, sun, frost, whatever, for a mere poxy percentage of what hes on, Christ these footballers want to wake up and smell the roses

People make out he's 35 the way they go on, he is 32 and still got a lot to offer for us.
He has contributed the most goals to the team this season with 6 goals and 6 assists.. Zohore is on the same with 10 goals and 2 assists which adds up to 12.
To offer him more than half his wages I think is disgusting even under the FFP rules, when you got people like Fred on near enough the same we will be offering Whitts, people complain about Lambert on the wages he's on but to be at 32 and contribute the most in terms of goals to the team this season at 32 and people think it's fine to offer the amount we are is absurd.
Don't get me wrong there's a lot of biased views on Whitts from me but the facts don't lie.
I hope he gets to 100 goals for us and I hope he is with us for at least one more season. I think if he was to go in the summer we would struggle to replace him.

I would like to see Manga Harris and whits stay but on sensible wages if they sign it will a show of thanks to the club as they have been well paid under poor managers and they should now take a reduction and pay the club back otherwise they can go

Problem with that is you are using the two wrongs make a right argument. Put simply Lambert shouldn't be earning anything near his undeserved wages and Fred should be sweeping the terraces on a zero hours minimum wage contract for all the use he is.
But that doesn't mean PW should get a new £25000pw contract. He should receive what he is worth and £10000pw is a very generous offer everything considered. I know he has been a great servant for the club, but he has been well rewarded for those contribution in previous contracts.
The club is no longer in a position to waste money with high rate contracts to players past their best.

Really sensible post! Some people need to wake up and smell the coffee.

Of course you are correct and it is a mad world when you think about it.
However, PW would argue he is offering his 'specialist' services and is asking what he considers is the going rate.
To you and me he is talking crap but to him it is perfectly reasonable. Let's hope NW see's it from our perspective.

Whitts was at his peak years ago...he was a fantastic player then but those days are long gone.
At the moment we are are better team without him in it and it's time to say goodbye with our thanks.
And yes I know he has more assists and a few goals this year...but that's only because he takes all the penalties, corners and free kicks when he is on the pitch....what does he create from open play these days???
I would be disappointed if we offered him any sort of contract

I agree to offer him more than half his wages would be disgusting ......he should be offered far less! And it shouldn't be too difficult to replace a player who will spend more time on his arse than his feet.

I'm a Whitts fan but I agree that he isn't going to be a regular first choice for Warnock so he will have to take a pay cut.
I think he still has something to offer the squad that we don't currently have elsewhere so well worth a decent contract which is why Warnock seems to indicate that they're still working on it.
He's certainly worth the effort above Harris whose demands are based on 4 months of performances rather than Whitts 10 years!!!!

Tbh I think Warnock is playing the game a little bit and is assuming he is a big fans favourite so trying to soften the blow. I would be very surprised if he will be with us next season. I expect he will do well elsewhere he still has it but I just don't see him fitting into the system Warnock likes. Our best games of later he has been on the bench. Yes potentially a great option from the bench but should we be keeping players on a good wage for the bench.

Someone who has contributed only less than Zohore to goals this season should be paid 10k a week? When you have people like Ralls, Gunnarsson, Harris and Hoilett not racking them figures in on more money.
We wouldn't be wasting money, he should be paid minimum 15k a week.
