Rotherham United are in talks to sign Semi Ayaji on a permanent deal, manager Paul Warne has confirmed.

The defender on loan from Cardiff City has been ever present in the Millers' back four since signing in the January transfer window.

And Warne wants to make his stay long-term, with talks ongoing.

“We are speaking to his people to see what the script is,” caretaker manager Paul Warne told The Sheffield Star.

The Millers are relegation certainties this season, 18 points from safety, but former Arsenal youth product Ajayi has been a rare bright spark in South Yorkshire.

The 23-year-old scored his first Rotherham goal in a 3-2 defeat to Huddersfield Town on Valentine's Day, and has appeared six times since the Bluebirds let him leave on loan.

He's also had loan spells with AFC Wimbledon and Crewe Alexandra since moving to Cardiff on a free transfer in June 2015.

Ayaji's Cardiff contract comes to an end on June 30 this year, so he could become a free agent if the Bluebirds choose not to offer an extension.

I'd be tempted to keep him and loan him out again and see how he gets on. He's probably on a very low wage with us and did well in pre-season. He could come good very soon. Judging by our financial situation I think that we need to be looking at cheaper options and get Warnock to work with them and make them better players. Semi certainly has all of the physical attributes, he just needs a chance to play at a decent level and loaning him out again would achieve this. :bluescarf:

He's 23 getting games at Championship level even if it is Rotherham, Wimbledon, Crewe and now Rotherham.. he will want first team level and not a loan spell at his age.
