It was another evening to forget for Harry Kewell’s young side in South Wales, as they fell to 7-1 defeat against an impressive Cardiff City outfit.

In difficult conditions at the Cardiff City Stadium, both teams struggled to find their rhythm in the opening exchanges.

Unfortunately for Kewell’s young side, when a half-chance did present itself his team just lacked the required killer instinct. First good progress was made by Watford’s Trialist left-back, but Dennon Lewis could only direct his volley wide of the far post before Dion Pereira couldn’t quite bring Lewis’ long ball under control when well placed.

These missed opportunities would ultimately prove costly, with Cardiff striking three times in a crazy five minute period just before the break. Wide-man Macauley Southam was the man to break the deadlock when his run beyond Watford’s defence wasn’t spotted, before finishing expertly past Charlie Bannister in the Hornets’ goal.

This goal sparked a previously dull game into life, and City took full advantage almost immediately. Robbie Patten found room on the edge-of-the-area before unleashing an effort towards Bannister’s goal. While his shot was certainly on target, it was a slight nick of a hapless Watford defender which ensured his effort found the bottom corner.

Worse was to come, however, on 43 minutes. The Bluebirds were awarded a free-kick on 18-yards out allowing Jamie Bird to step up and fire over the wall and into the top-corner, again via a slight deflection.

As with the first-half, the second began with neither team really dominating possession, but it was Cardiff who grabbed the next goal on 56 minutes. Forward James Waite found time and space inside the Watford area before tapping home beyond the exposed Bannister, after Southam unselfishly squared when well placed himself.

The Hornets did give themselves a glimmer of hope ten minutes later though through Dennon Lewis. The wide-man floated in field before collecting a fine pass from Charlie Rowan and firing low and hard past Ben Amos in Cardiff’s goal.

This hope didn’t last long, however, as that man Waite got himself on the scoresheet again shortly after. Much like his first, he found a pocket off space before striking a clinical effort into Bannister’s far corner. His hat-trick wasn’t far behind and again came from inside the area, this time audaciously rolling the ball into the far corner after good work by Keenen Patten in the build-up.

Waite wasn’t finished there though, rounding off a fine second-half performance with his fourth with the final kick of the game. With the Watford back-line pushed high, he peeled in behind before latching onto a perfectly weighted through-ball from Marco Weymans and dinking over Bannister and wrapping up a fine evening’s work for the home side.

Yes A couple of Players stood out for me...Obviously James Waite with his 4 goals

Cameron Coxe at Right Back was particularly good at getting forward down the right side. But it was difficult to tell whether he was good against a very poor Watford side.

I though Sion Spence when he came on in the 2nd half looked particularly comfortable with the Ball at his feet and, running, passing etc

Bellamy has put his marker down on his side with the emphasis on work rate, keeping possession and pass and move style of Football.
