Tom Adeyemi and Semi Ajayi join band of successful Cardiff City loan stars with goals for Rotherham United

By Dominic Booth

Thursday 16th February 2017

It's a common theme at the moment for Cardiff City loanees to prosper for their current clubs.

Whether it's the reinvigorated Emyr Huws at Ipswich Town or Matty Kennedy at Plymouth Argyle , the temporary Bluebirds' absentees appear to be thriving in first team action away from south Wales.

Whether that's good news or not for the Bluebirds is another matter. Neil Warnock might prefer to have those in-form players in his squad, while at the same time enjoying their progress.

But Rotherham United pair Tom Adeyemi and Semi Ajayi both did their Cardiff credentials no harm on Tuesday night by scoring against Huddersfield United at the New York Stadium.

The efforts of the Bluebirds' loanees ultimately proved fruitless as red-hot Huddersfield scored a late winner through Tommy Smith to seal a 3-2 victory.

But it could be an encouraging sign for Warnock as he looks to assemble a squad capable of a promotion push in the 2017-18 season.

Both Adeyemi (25) and Ajayi (23) could play a part. The Bluebirds will have the option of retaining both players at the end of the campaign, with Ajayi particularly highly thought of at Cardiff City Stadium.

Tom Adeyemi during his loan spell with Leeds United
It was Ajayi's 11th minute goal which opened the scoring for Rotherham to rock in-form Huddersfield early on.

Adeyemi then restored the lead with a 25-yard blockbuster on 71 minutes before the Terriers stormed to a dramatic three points through Smith and Elias Kachunga's late goals.

Central defender Ayaji has played every minute of every game for the Millers since signing a loan deal on January 30. The stabbed effort against Huddersfield opened his Rotherham account and was the former Arsenal youngster's second ever professional goal.

Adeyemi — signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in August 2014 — will see his Bluebirds' contract expire in the summer.

The ball-winning midfielder has impressed out on loan with Leeds United in the past and has played 19 times in the league for Rotherham this season. His future is unclear, but with four goals and two assists, he's slowly making a mark in South Yorkshire.

Neither play will be eligible for the Millers when they travel to Cardiff on Saturday, with loan players banned from featuring against their parent clubs.

Good news for the players and the club.

I like both of these players and I hope that Ajayi will be back with us next season and be on the bench. Super player.

Adeyemi is probably a Warnock type player but he will move on in the summer.

I want to see Ajayi back next seaon (whether or not we can re-sign Bruno on a cheaper contract). He has been excellent in the u23s and on loan, and is going to get better. At worst we have a player asset who can be sold in the future for a profit (may need to explain that concept to younger fans!). At best we have a top centre back for the next decade.

Paul Warne, the Rotherham manager, wants to keep Adeyemi and Ajayi next season if possible. I think/hope he'll be out of luck and both will be in the Championship:

Paul Warne wants Rotherham United to turn the loan deals of Tom Adeyemi and Semi Ajayi into permanent transfers in the summer.

The caretaker manager believes there is more chance of centre-half Ajayi staying at New York Stadium but says the Millers will also do all they can to tempt midfielder Adeyemi into remaining in South Yorkshire.

Both players - neither of whom is eligible for Saturday’s clash at parent club Cardiff City - have made a big impact with Rotherham, who are bottom of the Championship and 14 points adrift of safety.

Ajayi, aged 23, joined in the January transfer window four games ago, and Warne said: “Semi has been ‘ledg’. I hadn’t seen him play a lot, if I’m honest, before his debut against Nottingham Forest. It was a bit of a punt. I spoke to a few people about him.

“When he played at Forest, after five minutes I knew he fitted the bill a treat. He was doing exactly what we wanted him to do. He’s a great lad. He’s really grown into it. He enjoys playing here. Hopefully his future will be with us.

“I would like him here. He’s an ideal fit. He’s a good character, he’s young and athletic. I’ve said from day one, young, fit, hungry players are what I want.”

Adeyemi’s form with the Millers - he has hit four goals in his last eight matches - has been so good that the 25-year-old is likely to attract interest from other second-tier clubs offering lucrative contracts at a time when Rotherham could find themselves back in League One.

“If we have a whip-round, it’s a possibility he could stay!” Warne said. “I would love him to stay and, possibly, he would love to stay. Realistically, I don’t know if it’s a possibility.

“We would do everything, from a club point of view, to facilitate it. But if he keeps scoring from midfield - that kind of player is a dying breed - other teams in the Championship will want him. A midfielder who scores goals is worth even more to a team.

“I know the difficulties that lie ahead, but I can assure you we’ll do everything we can to keep him. At the end of the day, it’s Tom’s decision, because he will have choices.”

Warne is in interim charge until the end of the campaign and could remain in the hot-seat next season if chairman Tony Stewart asks him to.

The Millers are still without skipper and midfield man Lee Frecklington (ankle) and goalkeeper Lewis Price (illness) on Saturday, while Warne described striker Danny Ward’s chances of recovering from a calf injury to play against the Bluebirds as “50:50”.

Winger Jon Taylor should be fit after complaining of soreness after last Tuesday’s match with Huddersfield while right-back Darnell Fisher and central defender Aimen Belaid are back in the squad following hamstring problems.

Ajayi’s place is likely to go to new signing Joel Ekstrand who will be making his Millers debut against a Cardiff team managed by former Rotherham boss Neil Warnock.

Price has been in hospital with sinus issues and tonsilitis but is expected to resume training on Monday.
