I know that's why said years gone by was referring to champ now!

Wonder what people of the 40s & 50s thought of attendances of the 70s & 80s after all crowds of 50k was frequent back in those days, as we seem to compare 70s/80s with now? :old:

Like Polo said Al, it was only 7 years ago & a cup game so I don't understand what you're getting at. You're allowed more tickets for cup games if that's what you mean. :?

Polo read My post again? Answered 1st point! then was just wondering what older generation of the 40s/50s thought of support in the 70s/80s which was lot smaller than then! after all we are always comparing today with the 80s regarding support. Just expanding subject

10 sentenced after fight follows Chelsea-Cardiff game

Stamford Bridge
Police categorised the game as C-plus - the highest category for potential violence

Ten Cardiff City supporters have been sentenced for their part in a violent clash following a match against Chelsea.

A large-scale fight took place near Chelsea's Stamford Bridge ground after the FA Cup game on 13 February 2010.

A London court heard the men were arrested following a joint operation between the Metropolitan and South Wales Police forces.

The 10 are the first of a total of 95 suspects to be sentenced.

They received sentences ranging from community service to 16 months in prison for offences from violent disorder to affray and threatening behaviour.

All pleaded guilty after being caught on council CCTV cameras or via images filmed by intelligence officers.

On Thursday, West London's Isleworth Crown Court heard how police had categorised the game as C-plus - the highest category for potential violence.

The operation was codenamed Operation Turnhill and saw officers from both forces going undercover to spot known troublemakers.

The court heard the FA Cup fifth round match, which Chelsea won 4-1, had kicked off early at 1200 GMT.

It was the first time the teams had faced each other in 18 years and saw 6,000 Cardiff City fans head to London.

Prosecutor Howard Tobias said: "The reputation of the fans and the two clubs alerted police to the high probability of spontaneous and pre-planned disorder. It was believed violence would occur."

The court was told how a young mother with her nine-month-old baby and a seven-months pregnant woman in their cars were caught up in the clashes on the Kings Road after the match.

The pregnant woman told police she feared for the life of her unborn child and her own and was forced to speed away.

One officer suffered a broken jaw in the clash.

If the days when we take 6500 fans to Chelsea (or anywhere else) are to ever return the first thing we need to do is to stay in the FA Cup long enough to draw a top team at their ground

I think that football is attracting a different sort of audience compared to years ago. It was affordable to nearly everyone a long time back, and I believe that they were true fans back in the days that you mention. I know quite a few people who only started to go regularly when the good times were here a few years back, and suddenly became season ticket holders when we were in the Premier League. They even went to a few away games as well. At the same time, a lot of my mates who are not quite as well off did'nt go to many games due to costs, even though they would never miss a game back in the 60's and 70's. They will go when they can now depending on other bills that crop up and leave them short from time to time. The ones I know who had season tickets in the PL never go to a game now, and seem happy watching Arsenal and the like on television. Don't seem interested in Cardiff City any more, but I am sure that if we start looking like contenders for promotion, and perhaps the odd cup final thrown in, they will be back like a shot. The true supporters are down there this season, others would be if they could afford to join them, and the fair weather fans will be back only when we do well.

Does it not occur to any of you bright sparks that the reason people don't go to away games is because of the events described above? Thank goodness this element is being priced out of watching football.

was one of those games that that everyone was up for that came around once in a blue moon.
the club was in its final days as a hooligan club. at the moment we are in transition with many of those that used to travel having stopped.

I think you have it the wrong way around 58, the reason we have such dire away support now isn't because if trouble is it? Because there isn't any and hasn't been fir years. its at the said game that many realised it's not worth it anymore. Lots of people going to jail for not much and having their lives ruined. Seems like we've lost our more lively supporters of late.....
