Cardiff didn’t manage to strengthen their current squad significantly during the January window so could on of these free agents be the answer?
Neil Warnock is a massive fan of the free agent market, proven by his additions when first brought in as manager and it begs the question whether he can use it again to boost the Bluebirds season.
When first appointed, Warnock made the decision to bring in four new additions from the free agent market in the form of Kieran Richardson, Marouane Chamakh, Junior Hoilett, and Sol Bamba.
Although things didn’t work out for Kieran Richardson, & Marouane Chamakh – the additions of Sol Bamba and Junior Hoilett have proved pivotal at times.
Especially Bamba, who’s been exceptional at times. Earning a man of the match award on his debut, in the Severnside Derby victory over Bristol City.
In the very same game he scored a header to secure the points for the Bluebirds, it was also ironically Warnock’s first game at the Bluebirds helm. In total Sol Bamba has made 16 appearances for the Bluebirds, and is an essential part of Warnock’s side.
Although Hoilett hasn’t been as effective as Sol Bamba, he still remains a key part of the team. The 26 year-old has played 18 times for the Bluebirds this season, scoring once, as well as coming up with one assist.
That brings us on nicely to the three free agents the Bluebirds could sign to boost their season.
" Joey O’Brien "
With Peltier looking like he needs an operation on his ankle, the experience of Joey O’Brien could be just what they need. The 30 year-old has Premier League experience too which could help the Bluebirds.
O’Brien, generally speaking is an incredibly reliable full-back, and he wouldn’t have the amount of Premier League appearances he does if he wasn’t.
All in all the former West Ham player has made 111 Premier League appearances. He’s a more than solid right-back, and looks to get forward to supplement the attack as often as he can. The only real concern that Warnock would have over the right-back is how injury prone he is.
Since the 2009/2010 season he has picked up a whole host of injury problems, but with Peltier more than likely to be out of action when the Bluebirds are safe is he a risk worth taking?
" Royston Drenthe "
Royston Drenthe is a player who has been around the football circuit an awful lot throughout his career, but there is no doubt about the player’s ability. Since leaving United Arab Emirates based club Baniyas SC he’s been without a club, but he is certainly a player who could fit the bill at the capital.
The winger situation at the Bluebirds isn’t ideal. There is no doubt about their ability, but there is a lack of consistency. However, saying that, former Wycombe youth product Kadeem Harris has been very unlucky not to play more this season.
Whenever he has played he’s brought something different, he loves to run at defenders, and cause them problems with the pace and power he has at his disposal, but at times his end product is lacking.
The Bluebirds were left frustrated in the January transfer window, having failed with three attempts to lure Aberdeen winger Johnny Hayes to the capital. However, the free agent market may come as a blessing in disguise, especially with a player as talented as Royston Drenthe on offer.
" Christopher Samba "
Former Blackburn star Christopher Samba is another attractive name which the Bluebirds could bring in through the free agent market. The robust 32 year-old could come in to partner Sol Bamba, who was also brought in through the free agent market.
Throughout this season the Bluebirds have struggled defensively, conceding a total of 44 goals in 30 games. Captain Sean Morrison often struggles at the back with his positional play, and it has sometimes cost the Bluebirds points this season which must be of concern for manager Neil Warnock.
The only problem that Warnock might have in signing the Congo International is wages – but if he takes a pay-cut it could be a shrewd signing for the Bluebirds who are in desperate need of stabilising the back-line.
