" CANTON STAND CAPACITY INCREASE ? "

Thu Feb 09, 2017 4:56 pm

If they introduce "safe standing" to that part of the ground, it could increase capacity by around 12%. This would improve the atmosphere and potentially reduce match day ticket prices ...

Why is there a delay in passing the legislation in England & Wales when the reason it was brought in was due to the Hillsbrough disaster, which we all now are aware was not caused by terracing.

The Proposal: The sums

Here and on the next page are a couple of examples of how clubs can increase capacity, increase revenue and make football more socially inclusive by simultaneously reducing prices.

The increase in capacity is created by adding a 'rear step' along each row (this runs underneath the seat when the seat is down, as shown in the images on the right) and accommodating two lines of standing fans, one on the front step, one on the rear, between each continuous, row-long rail.

The Green Guide currently permits 1.8 standing fans per space required for a seat. The sums are thus as follows:

Stadium A
Current capacity: 35,000

Two-tier stand behind each goal

Lower tier of the ‘home end’ (3,500 seats) converted to safe standing

A section of the ‘away end’ (1,750) converted to safe standing

Total seat spaces converted: 5,250 (15% of capacity)

Total standing spaces created: 9,450 (5,250 x 1.8)

Revised total capacity: 39,200 (+4,200, i.e. +12%)

Example seat price: £25

Example standing price: £18

Total gate receipt potential before: £875,000 per match / £17.5m per 20 games

Total gate receipt potential after: £913,850 per match / £18.25m per 20 games

Potential gate receipt increase per 20-game season: £750,000

Potential total extra revenue (incl. spend on drinks etc.): £1.4m

We can't fill the stand as it is and it won't make a difference to the atmosphere as you can stand in the canton anyway.

Ok, for Wales games then... your totally missing the point...

The Proposal - More sums

Stadium B
Current capacity: 60,000

Two-tier stand behind each goal

Lower tier of the ‘home end’ (6,000 seats) converted to safe standing

A section of the ‘away end’ (3,000) converted to safe standing

Total seat spaces converted: 9,000 (15% of capacity)

Total standing spaces created: 16,200 (9,000 x 1.8)

Revised total capacity: 67,200 (+7,200, i.e. +12%)

Example seat price: £30

Example standing price: £20

Total gate receipt potential before: £1.8m per match / £36m per 20 games

Total gate receipt potential after: £1.854m per match / £37.08m per 20 games

Potential gate receipt increase per 20-game season: £1.08m

Potential total extra revenue (incl. spend on drinks etc.): £2.3m

Not sure it would be allowed, even if legislation was passed to allow it in England and Wales, International matches would still come under the jurisdiction of Fifa and Uefa depending on tournament and I'm pretty sure they do not allow standing at their games hence the old East Terrace always being closed in the Arms Park and the Kop shut when recent friendlies played at Wrexham.

I think my point was, cheaper match tickets and more importantly if you can increase capacity without the need for stand expansions, for example, Man Utd's current capacity is 77,000.

With a 12% increase the capacity would be 86,240, that's a huge increase with very little cost outlay, under old rules that would be a new tier/stand

(c£1m per 1000 seats)

It would be great if it worked out that way mate. But the pessimist in me is thinking if it was passed and implemented then they would keep the numbers the same. Because in safe staying I believe there's still a seat that you food back for each standing space?

The capacity for safe standing would be approximately 12% larger for safe standing matches, and 12% less for non safe standing matches.

The old Wembley had two capacities, 100,000 for Saturday games and 92,000 for evening games. So it's nothing new.

The sums don't factor in the money lost because existing people who pay for a seat will now stand as it's cheaper... we get around 14-15k per game usually, we won't suddenly get higher attendances!

Where are the extra people going to fit? The seats still exist and they can only sell one ticket per seat. It's not just like the old terraces where proper just squeeze in.

If you click on the link I posted , it explaines how the capacity is worked out.... the figures are not pie in the sky, there are engineers who have implemented this system in existing safe standing stadiums.

It would be fantastic for the atmosphere if we were ever to get back to the prem but without that it would be a bit unnecessary. Slightly concerned with the design of these new identikit light steel structured stadia. I doubt many will have been design to take an additional 80% of live load. I appreciate that the live load is relatively low but I would not want to be in the stand at Leicester in particular with nearly twice as many people.
