Huddersfield Town have handed a life ban from the John Smith’s Stadium to the man who unfurled a Turkey flag during Sunday’s game against Leeds.

A 59-year-old man was ejected from the ground after appearing to mock the stabbing of two Leeds fans, who died before a match against Galatasaray in Istanbul in 2000.

Huddersfield edge Leeds but brawl and red cards overshadow Hefele’s winner

“Huddersfield Town can confirm a 59-year-old man was ejected from the Revell Ward Stand,” the club said in a statement. “The individual has been banned from the John Smith’s Stadium indefinitely.

“Huddersfield Town takes incidents of this nature very seriously and will not tolerate this shameful behaviour under any circumstances. This individual is not representative of the club or its supporters.”

Leeds fans were furious when the flag was unfurled during the derby between the promotion rivals. Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight died after being stabbed during clashes the night before Leeds played Galatasaray in the semi-finals of the 2000 Uefa Cup.

West Yorkshire police tweeted on Sunday they had ejected the man responsible for waving the flag and the incident is now being investigated

A HUDDERSFIELD fan has caused outrage by disgracefully holding up a Turkish flag to provoke Leeds supporters during the Yorkshire derby at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Whites fans Kevin Speight and Chris Loftus were stabbed to death by Galatasaray hooligans before a Uefa Cup semi-final in Istanbul in 2000.

I don't care what team you are playing against you don't harass the opposition fans like that as there is a line in football banter and that has been well crossed here.

Well done Huddersfield for the lifetime ban.

Imo. Its no different to liverpool fans who chant about munich or utd fans who sing about hillsborough u never see these scumbags getting ejected. Looks like they have made an example of this guy with the flag.

If a Liverpool fan was holding a banner up about Munich or a united fan holding a banner about hillsborough, no doubt they would be identified and dealt with. When they're just singing about it, it's far easier to get away with.

I remember being at Wembley 2012 vs Liverpool. Outside the ground a mix of fans from all directions, really peaceful, and a group of around 10 Cardiff fans walking through chanting "Hillsborough" and filming themselves and the reactions of everyone around them. I was embarrassed to be a Cardiff fan that day. Absolutely disgusting.

And thing is murphy when its sung there is usually a crowd singing so much harder to police than one guy with a flag so your spot on there.

Agree. Pot, kettle and black from one or two over this occurrence

Not condoning for one moment but it's worth an ask "What would they have done about chants of Istanbul from a large number of people?" ;)

I know that Wez, I'm pretty sure that the Leeds fans/lads just let it go over their heads these days in the main.

Football has always been used as a vehicle to air sick chant's etc, mainly by kids or those who know no better, I have done it myself in the past when I was younger, I would be an absolute hypocrite to pretend I haven''t. What I would say though is that at 59 years of age that Huddersfield fan could do with giving his head a good wobble, preferably with a few of the Leed's lads hands around his neck

i see a difference in being at a game, getting carried away and singing stuff you shouldnt. and going out in advance to buy a turkish flag .
personally i found fans chanting Aberfan at us in the 70s really offensive, although i knew it was to get the reaction. the penny dropped for me then.
