Cardiff City midfielder Emyr Huws paying some of his own wages to be on loan at Ipswich Town

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock has revealed that Emyr Huws is paying some of his own wages to be on loan at Ipswich Town.

The 23-year-old creative midfielder completed a switch to the Blues late on transfer deadline day having made just one Championship start for his Welsh employers this season.

Ipswich and Cardiff appear to have disagreed over what percentage of Huws’ wages each club should pay during his time at Portman Road and it appears the player was willing to make up the difference.

Warnock said: “(Huws has) not had a look in, he’s a lovely lad, and it shows how much he wanted to play because he’s paying some of own wages. It’s unheard of for me, so it shows how much he wanted to go there.

“There aren’t many lads like Emyr. He came to see me and said he’d take a drop in wages to play. How many people say that? Everybody just wants to stay put normally. He wanted to go. I was going to do a swap and unfortunately the player I wanted to swap was injured.

“I didn’t want to stop him and Mick’s (McCarthy) a great pal of mine. I thought it’d give them another body really.”

Huws was tipped for big things when he came through the Manchester City youth system. He had loan spells at Northampton and Birmingham before signing for Wigan in 2014. Another loan spell, this time at Huddersfield, was followed by a move to Cardiff – for a reported fee of £2m – last summer.

He has made just four appearances for the Bluebirds though. On January 8 he played 90 minutes in the 2-1 home defeat to Fulham in the FA Cup in what was his first senior club outing in almost four months.

Despite his lack of club football, he has still been capped three times by Wales this season and came on as a substitute in the October World Cup qualifiers against Austria and Georgia.

Speaking to Ipswich Player, he said: “I haven’t played as many games as I’d like this season, but fitness wise I feel fine.

“I’ll give it my all every game, I’m box-to-box and I’ll try and provide some goals and assists.”

Huws, who joins up with Welsh international team-mates Tom Lawrence and Jonny Williams in Suffolk, could make his debut in tomorrow’s Championship game against third-place Reading at Portman Road.

£2m for him? :o :o :o :o :o :o

Let's hope that is wildly inaccurate and we didn't pay more than he's worth, ie about £250,000.

Warnock has admitted in that article that Huw's never had a look in, if I remember rightly he was on International duty when Warnock initially came in and Warnock decided which is his prerogative that others were going to start above Huws

Prior to that FA Cup game he had 15 Minutes against QPR, 2 Minutes against Blackburn and 45 minutes against Preston. I don't get some of our fan base who seem to have made up their mind that he is 'shit' on the back of that.

Warnock has even said he is not totally out of his long term plans, I hope he has a great time at Ipswich, gets his confidence up and comes back next season and fights for his place.

Fair assessment really, but from what I've seen he would be suited to a team who want to keep possession patiently which if we are honest, is not something we do. I would like to see him do well and come back and play a part for us, so good luck to him
