NEIL WARNOCK: "ITS NOW UP TO PETER WHITTINGHAM"

Fri Feb 03, 2017 10:58 am

Whittingham's current contract is approx £25,000 a week with bonuses.

It is believed City have offered Whitts less than half that.

NEIL WARNOCK: "ITS NOW UP TO PETER WHITTINGHAM"

Neil Warnock has confirmed Cardiff City have made a contract offer to Peter Whittingham – and can sign it when it wants.

Friday 3rd February 2017

The long-serving Bluebirds star sees his current deal expire at the end of the season with Warnock keen to keep hold of the 32-year-old.

The fan favourite – of whom supporters chant 'He scores when he wants' – has made 27 appearances this term taking him close to 450 games for the club he joined a decade ago.

And Warnock has admitted there have been negotiations with the midfielder's agent over keeping that run going with the decision now in Whittingham's hands.

But the Bluebirds boss says he won't set any deadline for the 97-goal hero to make his mind up over staying in South Wales, admitting the set-piece specialists deserves the respect not be rushed.

Whittingham is likely to be in Warnock's side to take on Norwich City at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, and the Bluebirds boss said: “We’ve made him an offer, it's on the table and it’s down to them. I spoke to his agent this morning but I think we have to leave it to Peter now.

“You have negotiations and it's to and fro and that's how it's been, but the offer is there on the table and it will stay on the table.

“I told Peter I’m not in a rush, I won’t withdraw it, so if they want to consider it for a length of time it’s alright with me because you've got to show respect to Peter.”

Whittingham has lost his automatic pick status somewhat under Warnock, but the veteran manager has still turned to his experience and quality since arriving at the club in October.

Warnock has previously said how impressed he's been by the club stalwart and says he can be very much in his plans.

having wasted millions in wages over the last few years on players that just didnt fit. i hope the offer is enough to keep him here. and boy im glad some of our fans arnt the ones making the offer because less than 50% of Emyr Huws wages which is what ive read a number of times isnt going to cut it.

i think he will sign for less money than he could get elsewhere for that reason. the question is,how much less.
i remember Andy Legg being offered only a third of his previous contract. im still gutted.

In my opinion Whitts should be offered a 2 year deal on 10 grand a week with sensible bonuses for goals and a set number of appearances. He should be awarded a testimonial at the end of the contract as well.

If true, seems a sensible enough offer - 10-12 grand a week.
Warnock obviously wants to keep him and respects him as has every City manager for the last 10 years. Still does a fantastic job at age 32. Also scored one and assisted the other goal in a 2-0 win last time out!

He does what he wants ..... :bluebird:

This will depends on purely how money motivated he is, or rather, those that advise him are or even his Wife etc.

He would have made a handsome living from Football and should be set for life, I would imagine he is a very rich man.

If he has been offered around the £10,000 p/w mark he would be silly to uproot now for the sake of an extra £5,000 a week somewhere else, having said that, maybe I am being a bit harsh, he may look to move for Football reasons especially if he is not going to play much, depends how much he want's to play week in week out whilst he still can.

What ever he decides, good luck to him

Probably half the wages he's on now I would say 8 to 10 k a week.

We'll soon know.I'm suspecting given his age and all its probably piss poor and might be NW's way of saying time to move on son.

I've also got a sneaking suspicion that he's not what Warnock wants going forward.

i think much the same.
and although he is probably happy here and as said above also pretty wealthy ,pride must play a part.
how much is he likely to play under Warnock.?
and would he sign a contract where he earns considerably less than lesser players { which keeps being suggested he should be offered }
i think he just might run his contract down and see who is the manager come May.

Reading between the lines it's a shit offer and Warnock is just paying lip service to the fans.

After the way Mark Hudson was treated it wouldn't come as a surprise if the club disrespected a club legend.

Chris, I have been told today its way less than half he is on now, so if Whitts leaves he will look the bad one not the Committee, but to be honest I don't think he's worth half of his current wages for Championship football.
