Cardiff were linked with a couple of players but didn't manage to land a marquee deadline day transfer
Friday
3rd Feb 2017
Neil Warnock has revealed why Cardiff City didn't spend on deadline day, days after admitting his disappointment at missing key transfer targets.
The Bluebirds were linked with Liam Feeney, Jonny Hayes and Matty Taylor on the last day of the transfer window.
But they didn't succeed in acquiring any of those targets. Only Greg Halford and Allan McGregor — earlier in the window — joined the Warnock revolution at Cardiff City Stadium.
And the manager revealed that a combination of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations and a hectic fixture schedule conspired against Cardiff.
"If we hadn't had a game on the night, we would have got a target in," said Warnock, who was frustrated that some Championship clubs had a free evening on Tuesday January 31 while his side faced a crucial clash with Preston North End.
Ross McCormack signed on loan for Nottingham Forest and Leeds United signed Modou Barrow in a couple of the more eye-catching Championship deadline day deals.
"We just couldn't get it done with the clearance and complications but if we'd been working at it from 4pm or 5pm we would have got it done, " Warnock added.
"It was unfair some (clubs) played the next day. In that afternoon, in an hour and a half and 40 calls, they don't understand what goes on. The people who do the fixtures should sit with us on deadline day to see what goes on."
Warnock also revealed Cardiff were close to securing a target, with the former QPR and Sheffield United boss keen to add invention and pace to his attacking line.
Although he did admit he was happy to wait until the summer to invest in his squad, after targeting a promotion push next season.
"Even at the death there was one we could have had, but the international clearance with the FAW makes it more complicated," he added.
"I always said I didn't want to spend silly money and I don't think we've spent a penny in the end. I think everyone behind the scenes will be happy — I imagine Vincent will be!
"But we're in a situation with FFP that we have to make sure we're right for the summer. The club have got commitments to players long since gone which is not helping the cause."

Not sure why couldn't get players in other clubs playing managed to do so? But way he's talking things are in place for summer that's why he seems to be ok with missing out on players! More concern is fact he says we still have commitments to other players but presumably that's the ones on loan? Over all reading most of his quotes he will be here next season as he sees us as promotion candidates

I still think it shows a lack of trust in his backroom staff, why couldn't he sort of transfers and let them run the PNE game or vies versa?

All the Tan haters must be gutted-just when all the conspiracy theories were starting to take hold, boom,NW spoils it by telling the truth.

It's not them as they have been with him before!! I'm thinking he realises we won't make top six even with additional players so not concerned with not signing anyone but saving money for summer when better choices available because we are still troubled by ffp!

Who pays Warnock's wages? The transfer window was open for the whole of January, not 90 minutes.

I got shot down for saying we needed strengthening
Yet our main players are out
Manga out 6 weeks
Peltier out for 2-3 months
Joe Bennett out still for a while
Anthony Pilkington out injured
Rickie Lambert bad back injury and getting old

He does explain we are under the financial fair play plus the big one is

That is a worry for me the FAW? no wonder we lose so many signing in the past

This story of playing a match on deadline day does'nt wash with me. Thirteen other Championship clubs also played at the same time, as well as a lot of others throughout the league. We managed to offload players without a problem on that day, so a bit odd that we could'nt bring anyone in because of a match which lasted for an hour and a half out of the 24 hours in that day.

There is a line in there that needs to be made a sticky.... The amount of messages slamming the club for not spending Slamming Tan for not backing the manager bla bla bla... its all over twitter and at the end of the day this is the killer message:
"Although he did admit he was happy to wait until the summer to invest in his squad, after targeting a promotion push next season"
so surely now time for all the Anti-Tan army in the minibus to start believing in our manager. He'll prob get a free thrown in somewhere if he gets desperate and just look how that's worked with Bamba & Hoilett... We aint going down so why panic buy now to risk a few good ones in the summer! By then even the likes of Le Fondre will be gone for good!

Same for English clubs buying foreign players? But surely these players didn't just become available on deadline day and obviously he new about restrictions on ffp? Not sure he's that bothered he didn't sign players as he's got ready made excuses that he's using.

steve we got players out on loan which I believe is a lot easier than a transfer
we are defo handicapped with the faw being involved in our transfers etc

You could make some of his other comments as a sticky as well, such as how he would have liked to add one or two to the squad, how we just missed out at the last minute etc. If we did'nt sign anyone because of FFP regulations, reducing the debt, not needed because Warnock was'nt looking to bring anyone in, then fair enough. The fans were lead to believe that Warnock was looking to get a winger in at least, and then apparently we looking at Taylor (may not be true), but it would have been far more sensible to have said from the outset that circumstances would mean no signings. I am one of these who believes that the club needs to operate within it's means, and never expected any signings. A lot on here expected at least one new player after our clear out, a bit of honesty up front would have ended those speculations.

Steve,I've said this a couple of times already. Many managers regard the Jan transfer window as a sticking plaster mentality when your club is in trouble. If we were still second from bottom or x amount of points from safety I think we would have got players in.But make no mistake January is the month that you pay over the odds for anyone commanding a fee with that lad from aberdeen being a prime example. We won't make the playoffs this season but I for one am glad we kept our powder dry when we will get players in at better prices than we would have to pay now.It easy to say NW should have been backed now but at some point you've got to respect the fact that the people that are employed to make these decisions. It would also seem that the people that have blamed Tan for this are pulling egg off their face as we speak.

I'm not having a go at anyone or the club for not bringing in new players. As I said in a post above, I did'nt expect us to bring anyone in for the exact same reasons you have just said, and rightly so in my opinion. I know a lot of fans on here were anticipating at least one new signing on deadline day, but I do'nt believe there was any intention of bringing someone in, and the club could have quashed the speculation with a brief statement from the outset. As for the play offs, perhaps it was just as well we did'nt make a couple of signings, we are only 10 points adrift and I have been saying all season that we have'nt a hope of making them. I was begining to doubt myself there, and if we had brought in a bit of quality who knows? Like you said though, there is not usually much around in the Jan window, and I still think a finish of around half way is achievable with what we've got at the minute.

The other puzzling thing is peltier & manga both out for a while but surely this was known before Tues? If so warnock would surely have moved heaven and earth to bring in at least one player in! Like said before I don't think he was overly concerned with this window more interested in the summer when he can make big push for promotion!!

did he ?
what i read is a load of contradictions.
Slade would have been slaughtered for that statement and excuses thats for sure.
im not too bothered we havent signed anyone and agree with your take on sticking plasters.
but thought what we would get off NW was straight talking.
FAs fault
FWA hinted slow with international clearence
fell asleep
agents not ringing back
jeez

I don't think Warnock had the money to bring anyone in Allan, which would explain Aberdeen's reaction to our approach (providing that's not just newspaper talk). He is obviously worried about our injury problem now, and can't afford too many more injuries otherwise we could end up back in the relegation battle. I am sure he would have liked some cover for potential injuries and suspensions, but has to accept that he has come to a club with massive debts, and that he can't spend money we have'nt got.
I don't think our financial position is going to be much better in the Summer, and I would bet that a small budget may become available, but nowhere near enough to satisfy Warnock's ambitions.

I would have liked us to have signed Hays as I believe he represented something we haven't got but Aberdeen were in a strong position and at 29 and untested at our level they were wanting silly money for him.
Fri Feb 03, 2017 12:47 pm
But there is two sides to a coin.. Why did he loan out all the youngsters giving him the squad depth he needed?
Sure, I agree with the sentiment of them getting game time, but surely staying in this division is a priority?
A few more injuries and the strengthening from other teams, surely we could be right back in it?

Agreed Allen, my view is wait until the summer as NW has said himself but if there WAS a desperation for a certain position surely it could have been sorted as other clubs seemed to cope.

there must be someone at the club who could pick up phones under instruction { this is my highest valuation }
just doesnt add up.
one minute there is a transfer committee next only one person can answer a phone ?

I will state strongly Neil Warnock is not happy at all with the situation and Tan and himself will be meeting in May to sit down and discuss the whole situation.
Warnock is a man of his word and will see out this season, but wants to be 100% guaranteed he is back next Summer, we all must wait till then and hope Tan is a man of his word
Fri Feb 03, 2017 1:57 pm
He's had the whole month to get people in,
What I would agree with is the silly ruling where Welsh clubs have to get clearance from both the FA and FAW on signings, that would add paperwork.
I I don't think it's as cut and dry as saying "hold the phone here's what I'm willing to pay deal with it" he's still got to get approval from the chairman etc and as we all know nowadays it's usually the chairman etc making the signings- therefore Warnocks probably taking a bullet meant for them.
We needed three bodies but I wouldn't have necessarily said it would have been in defence before the injuries
