' Vincent Tan & Neil Warnock Real Golden Ticket '

Actions speak louder than words. Which brings us neatly on to the transfer market.

By Scott Johnson

Thursday 2nd February 2017

Warnock wants transfer funds to bolster his Bluebirds in the summer, so will the purse strings be freed up after Tan felt let down by previous managers?

In February 2015, Vincent Tan attended his first Cardiff City game since deciding to reverse Bluebirds the rebrand the previous month.

Dressed in a blue home shirt, Tan was reportedly greeted by Peter Whittingham, who is claimed to have mischievously asked him: “Where have you been?”

Who knows if that is true or not? Nor what Whittingham would ask next time the owner makes an appearance at Cardiff City Stadium, as sightings of Tan have been rare since that game.

Fast forward two years and Cardiff finally appear to be heading in the right direction.

In Neil Warnock, they have a manager with the experience to mount a genuine promotion campaign and the charisma to unite a somewhat fragmented club.

The academy looks to be in good hands under the supervision of club legend Craig Bellamy, who may in turn be in a prime position to inherit Warnock’s post when he eventually departs.

The squad is leaner than it has been in some time and there are no longer any passengers at the club.

Everything is shaping up nicely, yet Tan's absence still raises debate, rightly or wrongly.

Maybe that is unfair. Remember, he continues to bankroll the club and he has a portfolio of other business interests vying for his attention.

It’s not like he resides around the corner like most of us, either.

It is often wondered whether Tan is licking his wounds after the failure of the rebrand and there may be some truth in that claim. We’ll probably never know for sure, but it did not stop him from honouring his promise to convert his debt into equity over the next few years.

Actions speak louder than words. Which brings us neatly on to the transfer market.

With the January transfer window closed, Cardiff are stuck with what they have until the summer and once again failed to address key weaknesses in the squad.

Short of using a megaphone, Warnock made his feelings on this matter crystal clear, but it made very little difference in the end. Spending was kept to a minimum, despite Cardiff’s perilous position in the table.

Greg Halford arrived for a nominal fee, Ibrahim Meite was a calculated risk from non-League football and Allan McGregor arrived on loan. It’s fair to assume that those acquisitions were probably covered by the release of Marouane Chamakh, Kieran Richardson and Lex Immers, so the club more or less broke even with their transactions.

There was an extended flirtation with Jonny Hayes, but it only succeeded in aggravating his club Aberdeen. In a window where Cardiff’s competitors have been busy, it is fair to say that the Bluebirds have lost ground at a time when I personally feel they should be looking to claw some back.

There are certain factors at play here. Financial Fair Play dictates strict limitations on spending, with penalties for falling foul of their guidelines.

One of the primary methods of increasing your revenue, and in turn spending capabilities, results from growing your attendances. That is clearly an issue for Cardiff, but it’s a chicken and egg situation. A winning team with good players will bring in more fans, but that will cost money.

Tan may also feel he has wasted huge sums of money in the past by indulging managers that he believes have betrayed his trust.

Whether or not the managers are at fault for this, or those responsible for writing the cheques, is a matter of opinion, but today's situation is what it is.

At the moment it appears Cardiff are unwilling to spend their way out of this division again, even if they could under FFP.

In my opinion, Warnock is not being particularly unreasonable with his demands for a few more quality players, even if he is baiting his employers a little bit.

His appraisal is that if you want to stand any chance of making it out of this division, you will need to invest in the squad. If you don’t, the best you can hope for is that the club will continue to tick over and drift.

The caveat is that Warnock does not appear prepared to hang around unless Cardiff aspire to be upwardly mobile. I would argue Cardiff need him more than he needs them, although that still did not result in any extra funds during January.

Warnock is not still plugging away at 68 to enhance his reputation or bank balance, he’s in it for the love of the game and is chasing a record eighth promotion.

To him, Cardiff may be ‘my kind of club, my sort of people,’ a statement that the club latched on to in a bid to sell more tickets, but that could change.

Obviously, the club should not be held to ransom, but if Warnock leaves, they are back in the cycle of identifying a manager and funding their need to shape the squad as they see fit, which is an expensive process in itself.

Managers of Warnock’s calibre do not grow on trees.

Cardiff don't always seem to take the easy option, but there is an easy option to take this summer and that is to give Warnock the tools to make Cardiff a force again.

Warnock and Tan on the same page is the golden ticket. Let's see what happens in the summer.

Will Tan provide the cash for Warnock next season. We will have ot wait and see but i don't think he will. Well not enough for what Warnock will need.

I think your right i expect tan will give warnock about 5m and say thats all your getting and that wont be anywhere near enough, really he will need about 8-10m to really push but thats not going to happen

Tan, Dalman & Choo just spew out spin and more spin, you can't believe anything the club put out. They will say all the right things when season tickets go on sale, then do nothing :bluebird:

Reminds me of the places I have worked and how budget controls are done. The manager comes up with a figure for the coming year and the board approve it at say 40% off. Some clever mamangers add 40% to overcome. Providing it is not a ridiculous total the board usually approve.

I feel what Warnock will ask for with or without the extra 40% will be too much for Tan. That's when we will find out if Warnock will remain or not.

Back in August I said we had no chance of making the play offs. The ironic thing is that we are now 11 points outside of the top 6, and with a little bit of financial backing Warnock may well have scraped into the play offs. However, I also predicted there would be nothing much to spend during the transfer window, and I don't blame Tan for insisting that the club is run within it's means, particularly when we have these outstanding debts. I don't see much changing in the Summer, we will still have huge debts and Tan cannot be expected to gamble the sort of money that the bigger clubs will be spending.
I think Warnock will thank the fans for supporting him, thank the players for giving him 100%, and then wish the club well before saying that unfortunately his ambitions and the club's ambitions are not on a par with one another. We will then be back on the managerial merry-go-round, and be looking for someone who can keep us in this league while continuing to cut costs.

I think that what Warnock will not be asking for huge sums of money.

Looking at what he's done with little or no money available at both Rotherham and Cardiff and how he's improved those squads during his time in charge has shown that he's a very astute manager, who doesn't need to spend millions to get results.

I'm sure Tan will say that any money generated from player sales can be utilised for new players next season but we have too many players who are still under contract and whose high wages and long contracts mean that we are going to be unable to shift them easily come the summer.

And let's not forget that all of these overpaid players have been approved by the "committee" of whom Tan is the main member!

The question is whether Tan is willing to put any extra money in to help if we can't get rid of the deadwood. Of course we do not know but my belief is that tan will say to Warnock that he can have all and every penny that's saved by selling players in the summer but nothing on top of that.

And that will not be enough to stop Warnock walking and I wouldn't blame him.

My thoughts exactly. 8-10mil and we could have a very dangerous squad. Can't see tan spending anywhere near that. So it will all depend on what Warnock will except or we can look forward to another mid table season.

yeah exactly i really cant see him handing out that kinda money,we'll see in the summer it will be spend 5m and if we are there or there abouts in jan then we will invest again, at which point i expect warnock will say thanks but no thanks, at the end of the day we need warnock more than he needs cardiff city

Tan and Warnock met a few weeks ago. They would have talked about next season and most likely agreed a budget for next season. Since the meeting Warnock has hinted in loads of interviews he will be here next season.

Our first 11 is not that far away from the likes of Leeds, Brighton etc right now. You don't need to spend a fortune to get out of this league. Having the right manager, squad togetherness and that little bit of extra quality we will get in the summer we might have our greatest ever season in BLUE!

Thought a meeting was scheduled for May to discuss next season. Warnock has said back me or I'm off. Not really a hint that he intends staying. Six points less for us, and we would have exactly half the number of points Brighton have, not really that close to them just yet. Are you sure you are not Wez in disguise?
