FOOT IN BOTH CAMPS: CARDIFF CITY

Norwich City FC

Thursday 2nd February 2017

CRAIG Bellamy is enjoying growing responsibility as a coach under Neil Warnock at Cardiff City.

Bellamy joined his hometown team in December to help its young players as a Professional Development Manager, according to Mirror Football, been involved with some sessions for Warnock's first-team.

The former striker came through the Canaries' Academy, spending ten years in total at the Club, ending his playing days at the Bluebirds in 2014.
Of their current roster of players, winger Anthony Pilkington spent three years with City before joining the Welsh side in 2014.

Midfielder Tom Adeyemi came through Norwich's Academy system and has been at the Cardiff City Stadium since 2014, but is currently on loan to Rotherham United.

Former Cardiff boss Paul Trollope served as a coach at City between 2012 and 2014.

Goalkeeper David Marshall joined Hull last year, bringing an end to a seven-year association with the Bluebirds having joined them from City in 2009.

One of Marshall's teammates in Norfolk was Robert Earnshaw, who struck 27 goals in 45 league appearances from January 2006 to the summer of 2007, having originally started his career with Cardiff.

Malky Mackay managed them between 2011 and 2013, and Spencer Prior, Simon Lappin and Gary O'Neil are also notable players who have featured for both clubs.

Finally, current City striker Cameron Jerome made his breakthrough with this weekend's opponents during the 2004-05 campaign; his form there eventually earning a move to Birmingham City.

The Football League have now announced the Match Day officials that will take charge of the game between Cardiff City and Norwich City this Saturday.

Cardiff City host Norwich City on Saturday February 4 for the game at the Cardiff City Stadium and the match carries a 3pm kick off.

Referee: Christopher Kavanagh
Linesmen: John Flynn and Mark Pottage
Fourth Official: Dean Whitestone

Match Day referee Kavanagh has officiated 25 games in 2016/17 with a return of 87 yellow cards and two red cards.

His highest card count this season was eight yellows in the game between Derby County and Nottingham Forest.

He took in 32 matches in 2015-16 and in those games, across all competitions and football divisions, he handed out a total of 114 yellow cards and three red cards.

He's pretty card card happy. In the match between Huddersfield and Preston on Boxing Day he showed a total of seven yellows. Blackpool and Barnsley on September 19 saw a total of six yellows and he also showed six earlier in the season in the Capital One Cup clash between Aston Villa and Notts County in August. In the MK Dons and Brighton match in March he showed eight yellows, with one red.

Kavanagh started refereeing in 1998 at the age of 13. Sixteen years later, he was appointed to the EFL Referees List and has now refereed over 50 EFL matches, including more than 20 Championship games. As part of the PGMO development programme, he officiated in the Dallas Cup in 2014 and was appointed as the fourth official for the FA Vase Final at Wembley in 2015.

Norwich City boss Alex Neil enjoying his striker dilemma but who should start up front against Cardiff City?

02 February, 2017 -

Cameron Jerome returns to his former club Cardiff City this weekend.

by Paul Chesterton/Focus Ltd

Cameron Jerome returns to his former club Cardiff City this weekend.

Alex Neil will relish his striker dilemma for Norwich City’s Championship test at Cardiff City.

Nelson Oliveira is back from a three-match ban before which he had plundered 10 goals in 12 games. Former Bluebird, Cameron Jerome, struck twice during Oliveira’s absence to give Neil the sort of selection headache he wants.

Neil knows his side must show a ruthless edge away from Carrow Road to get back into the promotion picture after failing to win in the league since beating Wolves on October 1.

“A great dilemma to have, especially going to a place like Cardiff,” he said. “It is not going to be easy down there. We are going to need all the squad fit. We have Nelson coming back and we just need to make sure we utilise the strengths of both lads as well as we can because they are complete opposites.

“When teams squeeze the pitch and want to play high that suits Cameron down to the ground. The one thing we all know is he has got is blistering pace and strength and he used that against Birmingham. Not only that, we used him really well.

“At times we can play too short and we need to encourage the lads to go a bit longer, particularly when teams squeeze the pitch, because we have someone who can run like a gazelle. For the first goal he robbed a lad in the middle of the park, runs the length of the pitch, dips his shoulder and shows a great bit of composure with his finish. For this level that is quality.”

Timm Klose added a second with a rare headed finish that Neil is demanding more of from the Swiss international.

“He did that in the Premier League. It was a very similar goal as well, when he got across the front of his man and the ball in is spot on,” said Neil. “Robbie (Brady) put it on the money but you need players to go and show real aggression and determination to win it, which he did. I agree he could certainly do more in terms of the threat he carries in the opposition penalty area.”

It has to be Jerome over Oliveira for Norwich City’s trip to Cardiff

02 February 2017

By Chris Lakey

Managers always love one of those “welcome headaches” and having to choose between Cameron Jerome and Nelson Oliveira as Norwich City’s main striker at Cardiff this weekend fits the category.

It has to be the man who holds the shirt who gets the vote – and that means Jerome.

Consider the effects of choosing Oliveira: it’s a signal to the Portuguese that, after coming back from a three-match ban, he can walk back into the team. Yes, maybe he has been superb in training and, yes, he was on a great run of seven goals in his last eight games before his red card at Rotherham.

Jerome has two in his last three, including that special goal against Birmingham last weekend. Drop him, and it’s a kick in the teeth.

Starting Jerome with Oliveira on the bench is a carrot to keep them both hungry. There is another option – play them both. Although with Cardiff having won their last three home league games it’s unlikely.

What will Norwich bring?

Neil Warnock:

"The squad on paper is bottom half of the Premier League when you look at the names - I’ve tried to sign Jerome six times in my career - they have good players but it’s a great test, I’m glad we’re playing them as they’re a side that should be going up or close."

"It’s great to pit our wits. These next three games we shouldn’t get a point but I’d be disappointed if we don’t get three!"

Cardiff City must banish any lingering disappointment from an underwhelming transfer window and muster all their energy for the visit of Norwich City to the Welsh capital.

Alex Neil's side are targeting a play-off place, but Cardiff can potentially move into the top half with a victory themselves today.

It would quite an achievement for Neil Warnock, who will be eager for his team to claim a fourth successive home win. The Bluebirds haven't conceded a goal in front of their own fans since the 4-3 defeat to Barnsley on December 17.

With injuries to Rickie Lambert, Anthony Pilkington and Joe Bennett, we'll have to wait and see what Warnock's team sheet looks like.
