Cardiff City make enquiry for Bristol Rovers striker Matty Taylor

By Chris Wathan

31/01/17

Cardiff City are understood to have made an enquiry for Bristol Rovers striker Matty Taylor.

But the contract he signed at the end of the last year contained a release clause of £300,000 that has sparked interest in his availability.

It is understood Cardiff spoke to Rovers about the player, with boss Neil Warnock still keen to add some attacking options to his squad.
Taylor set on a surprise move across Bristol to Lee Johnson's City – the first player in more than 30 years to make that move.

Warnock has admitted his frustration at not having more room for manoeuvre in this window, but has stressed in public and private he will not pay over the odds and is keener to keep cash for more significant spending this summer.

It is thought there is a good chance that Warnock might have to first try and offload a player from his wage bill if he did want to push through a deadline day deal.

Bristol Rovers Striker Matty Taylor

In June 2014, Taylor signed for recently relegated Conference side Bristol Rovers, reportedly rejecting offers from former sides Oxford United and Chester as well as Mansfield Town and Kidderminster Harriers.

His Bristol Rovers career got off to a difficult start as he scored just three times in his first 18 games. He finished the season with 20 goals, including one in each of the play-off semi-final games against Forest Green Rovers. He played the full 120 minutes of the play-off Final and scored Rovers' second penalty of the shoot-out as Rovers secured an immediate return to the Football League.

Taylor scored his first Football League goal in a 3–1 win against Barnet FC. A successful start to his season resulted in Taylor scoring eight goals in all competitions before mid November, including two goals vs Carlisle United. After an unstoppable run, Taylor achieved 14 goals in all competitions before Christmas, including hat-tricks in the 3–0 victory against Wycombe Wanderers and 4–1 win against Hartlepool United. On the final day of the season, Bristol Rovers achieved promotion to League One by scoring a dramatic winner in the 92nd minute. Lee Brown scored the decisive goal after Taylor himself hit the post.
Taylor finished the season with 27 goals and five assists, outscoring every player in the Football League.

Taylor proceeded to score on his League One debut against Scunthorpe United in a 3–1 loss.

On 18 October 2016, Taylor scored a second-half hat-trick to earn a point for the Rovers against Milton Keynes Dons in a 3–3 draw.

Annis,

This could be true and explain the haggling over Hayes?

Would be super to sign the 2 on the last day :bluescarf:

Karl,

Warnock has had No real money since he has been here, yet he has proved himself beyond doubt.

We have saved a fortune on wages getting rid of over 20 players in the last year alone, so if Warnock spent £1mill on two players thats not really breaking the bank :thumbright: :bluebird:

Warnock wants a striker and a winger,he wants a proven goal score and a player with pace.

The Matty Taylor bid is just a strong rumour

Also not a waste of money,as both would be great additions, to the squad for next season.
Probably not on big wages either.

Exactly they need to show ambition,im not one who believes in waiting to spend in the summer a good squad takes more than one window to build

There's much more buzz online that he will cross the city to Ashton Gate.

Looking like Bristol City at this moment.

Bristol City are looking to secure a shock deal to sign Matty Taylor from bitter rivals Bristol Rovers, reports Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope.

31/01/17

Taylor has been prolific over the past 18-months, scoring 28-goals to help Rovers gain promotion from Sky Bet League Two last season.

The striker has continued his form this season, bagging 19-goals so far this term- helping Rovers reach eighth in League One.

Darrell Clarke’s side are on the rise and are now sitting just three-points outside the play-off places, and losing their top goal scorer could seriously derail their season.

Rovers’ chairman Steve Hamer was quoted saying, the sale of Taylor was the “last thing” the club were considering doing.

In stark contrast to Rovers’ rise through the Football League, neighbours Bristol City are struggling.

After an impressive start to the Championship campaign, Lee Johnson’s side have fallen away in the league and sit just two-points above the relegation zone, and have failed to record a victory in the league since December 3rd.

City’s on-loan forward Tammy Abraham has scored 19-goals this season and Johnson seems to want to strengthen his defence- but did not rule out a surprise move on deadline-day.

Few rumours Cardiff could be interested in Bristol Rovers striker Matt Taylor.

There’s nothing concrete from the Cardiff end on this whatsoever, and reports elsewhere seem to suggest Bristol City are the ones set to land him by activating a £300,000 release clause.

The 26-year-old has a pretty phenomenal scoring record, netting 73 goals in 125 appearances for Rovers since 2014. On paper, he’s a player that would be in Cardiff’s tight budget but we’ll see if anything emerges throughout the day.

It's not the fee the club pays that is important- it's if we can offer enough money to the player. Taylor likely to want £20g a week and Hayes at least half that. That's a million and a half in wages for a year. To get the deals done, you have to make sure the players know how much they can make.

BBC Points West sports editor is supposedly reporting that a deal has been struck and Matty is on his way fro a medical at Ashton Gate.

just off the phone to a mate of mine with 'The Gas' and he reckons its down to wages so maybe go in and offer more than Bristol City, personally I'd throw some of the Hayes cash at this and leave him up in Aberdeen.

This is a good point. It's early in the day yet and Rovers may have accepted a few offers. It's now down to the player to speak to all those in for him.
