Tan has pledged to help out the poorest families in the Philippines and wants to replicate success in Malaysia

By Jack Vittles

The Cardiff City owner has promised to build 5,000 homes to help those in the greatest need, local media in the Philippines has reported.

According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer , Tan will carry out the project along side the Gawad Kalinga (GK) Community Development Foundation - a Philippine based poverty alleviation and nation-building movement.

Vincent Tan has given millions to charity
The Malaysian is known for his generosity when giving to charity, and last year was honoured by the Kiwanis International Foundation having given almost £150,000 to help vaccinate about 110,000 mothers and babies in a bid to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus.

Speaking about his pledge to build the homes, Tan said: "The rich became rich because a lot of poor people supported their businesses.

In 2012, Tan also donated $2m to GK as part of a pledge to build 3,000 homes for Filipinos affected by natural disasters.

"We committed 3,000 houses several years ago and if you build faster we would like to commit to 5,000 homes," said Tan.

After Typhoon 'Sendong' hit the Philippines, Tan pledged to spend half of his wealth on charitable work.

"We’re very pleased to help the Philippines by doing business here. Like what I always say, the rich people need the poor to support their businesses and I think the rich must give back as much as possible.

“I pledge half of my wealth to charitable work. The masses support our business and who are the masses? Many of them are poor.”

The Bluebirds' millionaire owner is hoping that by supporting GK's work in the Philippines they can replicate the work that has already started to help the poorest families in Malaysia.

Outside football (and much of that his down to a mix of his own mistakes and the anti-Tan rhetoric of the BBC 'luvvies' and others) Vincent Tan is renowned for his charitable existence. He sees it as a 'duty' and should (has been on here) highly commended for his actions not only in the Far East but also in the local communities of South Wales :ayatollah:

He cannot be faulted for that and I think most people can separate the two!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Tan take money from the club to donate to the local communities of South Wales? I never thought Tan donated a single penny himself? Apologies if this is incorrect of course.
