Cardiff City: Neil Warnock 'distraught' at defeat by Reading

BBC

Saturday 28th January 2017

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock was left "distraught" after his side's 2-1 defeat at promotion-chasing Reading in the Championship.

For the second time in four days, the Bluebirds lost by a single goal, having lost 1-0 at Brighton & Hove Albion in midweek.

"That's two games on the trot now. We could have easily won both," said Warnock.

"It shows that we're not far off. We haven't got enough goals in the team."

However, Warnock says the lack of strike power does not mean he will change his mind on the possibility of signing a striker or strengthening elsewhere in his squad.

He added: "I don't think we can sign anybody in this window to change that, really.

"But it frustrates me. I don't want to be doing this for the next four or five games, which are all tough games, coming in and saying how disappointed I am because we've done well.

"I'd rather play rubbish for a few weeks and get some points on the board.

"We might not do anything. I'm not going to spend money or offer more than players are worth.

"I'm not going to offer money for players that are probably just on a par with what we've got so I think we've got to bite the bullet and I've got to conjure up a few more wins with the lads I've got."

But he believes Cardiff's displays against the Royals and fellow promotion hopefuls Brighton underlines their progress.

"It shows how far we've come because I'm absolutely distraught tonight," said Warnock.

We've certainly come a long way since that clown Trollope was in charge.

However I'm not sure that at any time over the last two games have we ever looked capable of actually winning the games.

We've had a few decent spells in each game and we have plenty of fight and heart but we are so short of quality in almost all areas of the pitch that we really didn't threaten an upset in either game I'm afraid.

David, these clubs that have beaten us have spent money and have strength in depth.

I wasn't at the game I've only watched the highlights which we looked threatening in and could have at least got a point hopefully we can get some points on the board in the next few home games

You're right of course.

And we've squandered millions of pounds over the last few years on players who were average or worse.

Could have easily got a draw today. We made a load more chances than usual, we just aren't used to finishing them or being more composed near the goal. Also they need to take advice from Tan occasionally and try the odd long shot.

Same old story for probably the last 6 years we need a goal scoring striker and that ain't cheap anymore unless we get a gem from abroad

Wez, the funny story is, every manager has said it,virtually every fan has said it and we are screaming out for a decent striker.

I believe Warnock will be allowed one this Summer otherwise Warnock will walk.

We had Guerra and Burgstaller. Seen them score a few goals these past years, and they were free signings.
Haven't seen many games this season, but we are creating the chances then, I gather?

Wez,  You have included Malky yet we created chances and slugged out win after win and goals came from more than one player thats how Malky played his football and he got the results.

No problem in the Championship under Malky, facts prove it,play offs and Cup Final first year and second year runaway Champions of the Championship and history was made  :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

The last there years have just got worse and if you were honest you would admit it :thumbright:

Annis it's not about slagging off malky, it's true that we haven't address the striker problem since the dave Jones days you need to start admitting that ! All our strikers have failed since the days of bothryod and chopra

Best no 9 at the club is Lambert. He can do the job that the very effective Helguson did.
Pilkington is our best no 10 and Whitts is our most creative player.

Bennett is our best attacking full back.
All 4 were missing yesterday for one reason or another.

The side put out yesterday is always going to be one which scores little and tries to grind down opponents

Tend to agree with you about Pilkington and Whittingham but for me, Lambert is nowhere near as effective a player as Helguson was.

Considering that Helguson was older than Lambert he was more mobile and much more of an aerial threat.

agree
nearest we came to getting a 2nd goal was that slice their player did at a corner.
plenty of effort very little quality

I think everyone agrees that this squad is not going to finish in the top two, and is not going to get close to a play off place. Even Warnock has said publicly that this squad is not good enough to challenge for a play off place. We have almost the same squad we had at the start of the season, possibly a slightly stronger one. Taking everything into account, what did fans see in this group of players that had them predicting a top two finish, or top six at the very least. Are our players performing well below their capacity, or was it just a case of over enthusiasm and a refusal to see anything beyond the City boundaries. If it is a case of our players underperforming, that would suggest that if Warnock can get them performing to their maximium ability, we should only need one or two additions with not a lot of cost involved to get us into a position where we can challenge the top few next season.

For me Steve it is definitely a case of players not performing to their maximum capacity.

The Squad finished 8th last year under Russell Slade and up until recently 12 of the 18 man squad that finished the season at home to Birmingham were still on our books, 11 now Immers has been sold.

The Goalkeeping situation aside which I appreciate can't be underplayed our Squad is arguable a lot stronger than it was last season so if we can sort the Goalkeeping situation out and bring in a striker Warnock should be able to get that team challenging for a top 6 finish next season. I don't believe it is as bad as sometimes made out.

Aside of the Keepers the other 4 in that Squad that are no longer here are Turner, Malone, Ameobi and Lawrence, I would say that Bamba is an equal for Turner, and Bennett is as good as Malone, as for Ameobi and Lawrence, they cannot be seen as a loss as they were generally regarded as poor whilst they were with us.

i think its a bit more complicated than underperforming or playing to max, yesterday i think there were some good performances ,some not ,but everyone put a shift in.
for me they are playing under instruction the way our manager wants to play at the moment. it was quantity at expense of quality . how good these players are or might be with 2 or 3 good signings in the right areas with more of a plan than the kick and rush who knows.one thing is for sure, our wage bill is massively out of sinc to what we see on the pitch.

Disagree there.
Helguson was the slowest player I've seen in a City shirt and Lambert is his equal in the air.

I think a lot are biased due to the fact he's a big earner.

Lambert has also got 4 goals in only a small number of starts.
