The Bluebirds suffered a 2-1 defeat to promotion-chasers Reading at the Madejski Stadium, and Warnock admits he can't wait for the summer

Neil Warnock has outlined his frustration at having to bite his tongue and bide his time before pushing Cardiff City on, admitting: 'I wish I was here this summer'.

The Bluebirds boss saw his men go down to promotion-chasing Reading after struggling to find the extra bit of attacking quality to go on top of another hard-working display.

The veteran manager has accepted he won't have the chance to add to his squad in the final few days of the transfer window, leaving him remain hopeful that the club match his ambitions this summer about funding the transfers he believes will lead to a promotion bid.

But, having tasted a second narrow defeat away to a team at the top-end of the division in a matter of days, Warnock said: “We've just got to persevere with what we've got. I can't see a lot changing, we're honest lads but there's not enough goals. We got in good positions but the reactions weren't quite there.

“We know what we need to make that difference – it's just going to be frustrating biting my tongue answering the same questions about the side for the next 18 games.

“I can't see us doing much because I'm not going to spend money on players that aren't better than what we've got, so I might as well try and limp over the line. We don't need much, we need three or four quality players now. We have genuine players, they're all honest, no-one passed the buck today, they all worked hard and gave their all, but there's just not enough quality in certain areas.

“So until the summer the club's got to keep powder dry and look at what's available then because the league is wide open to get promotion.

“I wish I'd been here in the summer. It's not for me to criticise but they have spent a lot of money – and now I'm asking them to spend a bit more. It's easy for me to say because it's not my money.

“The fans are really behind me, and I think the owners are – we just have to find a way to get those three, four, five players to supplement what is a very hard working side with a good spine. We need another leader up top, but at the moment it's just a matter of me being frustrated after games like this and wishing we were a couple of months down the line.”

Yann Kermorgant's second-half free-kick was the difference between the two sides after a Joe Ralls penalty cancelled out John Swift's opener, Cardiff unable to get anything from a push for a winner as they matched up to the third-placed Royals.

But Warnock is said he'd be happier playing rubbish and getting points after the second defeat in a week, warning the threat of the drop isn't over yet.

He said: “We put a lot in and again lost to a goal that shouldn't have been. It's frustrating. We've got another three or four tough games and I hope don't have to come in again and say how well we played but lost, I'd rather play rubbish for a few weeks and get some wins under our belts.

“This was a great lesson how far we've come, we're nearer than I thought. But first things first, we have to stop ourselves from being relegated.

“I can't remember other than first goal a shot that caused us any problems. We had more of the chances, especially in the second-half when we stepped up a gear. We are where we are because we can't win games, because we can't score goals when we're on top. The sooner we get to 50 points the better.”

"Can't wait for January" brought no quality in and now its "Can't wait for the summer" probably be the same case then.

I can feel his frustration just by reading that wouldn't be surprised if he walked and wouldn't blame him.

I'd be pissed off too looking back at how much money the club wasted in the summer backing Paul Trollope. I wouldn't blame him if he walks in the summer and more fans will walk with him unfortunately.

They haven't backed him in this window they wont in the next that you can bet your mortgage on its a smokescreen to sell season tickets

Let's be real we been in this position for a while and Warnock would be pretty naive to think he would have money to spend in January.. and before anyone says some crap that Warnock was promised money to spend that's nonsense because Dalman and Choo said there was not going to be any activity from us bar frees or loans.

And Warnock is not going to put up with that.

I might be in the minority but I don't really mind if we don't bring anyone else in, and don't think we really need it.

I think we've got a good enough team to stay up, and would be shocked if we now went down. That was the one and only job for Warnock to do this season. We were always going to be extremely unlikely to make the top six.

Would much rather us do our business in the summer, instead of paying over-inflated prices this month. Because all we'd be doing is building for next season.

Makes more sense to wait until the summer. We don't know whether the club will put the money up then, so we can only wait and see what happens.

I have said before that I don't think Warnock will be here beyond the end of this season. He has been brought in to keep us up this season, and I do not think Tan will be in any rush to spend money during the Summer. He knows from experience the sort of gamble required in an attempt to get us back up, and I doubt if he will be prepared to risk losing money again. His interest seems to be far less than when he was investing heavily to get us promoted, as can be seen by the amount of games he attends. I think we have to accept that staying at our present level is the target for some time to come.

I agree, would be great if we got a bargain but happily wait until the summer. This team will not go down, it will be a huge step backwards if Warnock is not backed in the summer as he will walk but I think he will be backed. He's not asking for the world. Time will tell

Then again, it may mean they said the right things since he has been here and (let's be honest) the only realistic objectives for this season now are to avoid relegation and try out a few 'fringe' players before the inevitable end of season clear out!

Have to say that for the first time in a few years I am actually feeling a little positive having a 'football' man at the helm and I cannot comprehend the City hierarchy not seizing the opportunity to have a push next season :ayatollah:

Don't seem to be any frees or loans coming in either.

Warnock's right - there's not enough quality in certain areas.

Those areas are

Goalkeeper
Defence
Midfield
Attack.

Other than that we're fine.

Tend to agree.

And they will keep trying to stay up whilst employing chumps like Slade and Trollope and sending us letters with our season ticket renewal forms telling us how they're going all out for a top six finish every year.

Minority maybe but I agree with you. I would much rather see him bring his own players in during the summer and have a pre-season. This January, I'm not too bothered.
It sounds pretty simple though, the club either back him in the summer or he's off. I think he'll get some backing and will be with us next season. I think we'll do well then but we won't get promotion.

Well why did he come? He would have clearly known that he wouldn't have much money to spend.

He came to keep us up first weather the people upstairs are giving him false promises will be found out in the summer.

Backing Trollope? You got to be kidding me ain't you?

He had his two best players Marshall and Fabio sold from beneath him and his second choice keeper in Moore.

Richards was a swap for Malone

Fred and Bennett Free transfers and we clearly had to wheel and deal to bring in Huws and Lambert.

You can say many things about Paul Trollope and I wouldn't argue with most of them but to say we wasted Millions in the Summer and that the Club backed Trollope I find a bit bizarre to be honest.

Board has stated numerous times there won't be any money to play with up until this window, we have to see what they say in the summer but they have made it clear several times from the summer window and this one, no money.. people need to grasp the idea.
