Cardiff City Defender joins Owls

He is the 6th player of the 10 Cardiff City players released this January to so far find a new club.

Sheffield Wednesday FC

23rd January 2017

Sheffield Wednesday have signed former Cardiff City defender Ashley Baker.

The 18-year-old will go into the Owls Under-23 squad.

An international at youth level with Wales, Baker first joined the Bluebirds in the Under-14 age group.

The central defender, who is equally capable at full back, became a key player for the Cardiff Under-18s and Development Squad during his time in the Welsh capital.

The Bridgend-born defender completed his scholarship with Cardiff and was offered professional terms following the conclusion of the 2014/15 campaign.

Baker now joins the Owls following the expiry of his contract at The Cardiff City Stadium, signing at Hillsborough until summer 2018.

I heard nothing but good reports about him, but City are trimming the wages at all ages.

Yaworth was snapped up by Ipswich but now playing elsewhere it's a hard business and as long as they can pick up a wage good luck to them all.

Seems we have a lot of average youngsters hopefully bellers will sort out the best ones to keep? Also unfortunately there are several hundred out of work footballers at all ages looking for clubs every season few get places and drift to non league or leave altogether ! Money is dragging in wannabe footballers who are simply average at best. :old:

Well obviously the ones that were in our development side are not of higher enough standard or wouldn't be released???

of course. but to have got to a postion where they have gone through the academy and been under contract they have to be in the top1% often identified at a very ealy age when money is not their gratest concern.
sorry mate but the idea that money is attraction in playing football for 7 year olds. wow

You have a point but if you believe some parents (often living their own lives through their children's 'talent') don't push their kids in that direction, you need to go watch some of the junior games around the country. The vehemence with which some 'wannabe' parents chastise anything and anyone who might be perceived to be 'in their way' is mind-numbing in its ferocity ;)

Allan, It will be interesting to see what is left?

Also most of this was more cost cutting rather than sorting out sho the best were.

It will be interesting this Summer coming to hear what names have. One through after the last 7 years of players being trained by our coaches.

Yes not very productive but we are not only ones , looking at what's being done come to conclusion that we will lose most of the 21/23 yr olds and concentrate on the 16th olds under Bellamy and personally think it's way forward as like people said if not made it by 20 probably never will at this level

ive watched literally thousands of games thanks.if you think that pushy parenting is tollerated at academy level.or infact a pushy parent being able to influence a scout or coaches think again.might work at the bottom of the pyramid but not at the level we are talking about here.
parents.the vast majority with children identified as talented enough give up far more time than most would imagine plus the expense of travelling and often time off work.
