My memory is not that great but if late 70s or early 80s anything to go by with exception of Bristol would say wasn't that great! At times only took 1 coach midweek in late 70s . Besides I am 60 so guess few on this board old enough to go away pre 74? :old:

When I first went (75) Cardiff would get abou 6k at home then take about 3k away, it amazed me any club could regularly take 50% of home fans away.

I went away a lot 73 until 81 and some midweek games we took less than 56 !

Doesn't answer your question but when I started going away in the early 90's when we in Division 3 (bottom division) our following's were great, we used to pack out places like Torquay and Exeter, seen us fill away ends at the likes of Mansfield and Chester, take thousands to Wrexham, always over 1000-1500 to London Clubs like Barnet, Leyton Orient. Seen us pack out the away ends at Cambridge, Northampton, Darlington etc and take 7-800 to places like Scunthorpe and Scarborough when we were pretty crap, seen us take 5-600 to Rotherham on a Tuesday Night, that's just a few of the top of my head, loads more.

Then during the Sam days and the Valley Rams we would take thousand's everywhere, even up north, we would always take 1,000 to most places at the very least.

my 1st was orient 01/12.1973. saturday afternoon we took about 150. it was the 3rd relegation battle in a row having escaped by 1pt and 2pts the previous 2 seasons, drawing at home to palace to stay up and relegate them on the last day. and eventually going down a season later so not much to cheer.
having said that hardly anyone came to NP at all.
our 3rd division promotion season the year after{75/76} saw a huge upturn in us travelling

When I started going away with City in the 70's we would take at least 800 fans and many times 2,500,3,500, yet we were always struggling in the old second Division.

In the late 80's and 90's we went as low as 11 away fans and most away games in midweek we would be about 150 fans going to places like Rochdale,Tranmere etc
But we could also take a few thousand to places like Bristol Rovers,Bristol City,Reading,Plymouth,Exeter,Walsall etc :bluebird: :bluebird:

We went through a stage with the Rams of 1,000 midweek up north, different eras which go up and down which is what will happen again in time. Hopefully  who can forget 4,000 plus in Wrexham.

Hard to remember the numbers so long ago but had to be 1500/3000 at the games i went to.

Surely can't compare the two eras, given the (relative) disposable incomes and the transport links that are around today in comparison to the late 60's and early (strike-laden) 70's? :?

I was at that game and went on the supporters club bus from Pontypridd, great bunch of Merthyr boys were on the bus, I was still in school and it turned out to be a white knuckle ride from the moment the bus parked up in New Cross gate, no hiding place in the ground and legged it before the final whistle with a few other lads off the bus and ended up running a gauntlet at New Cross Gate station, a day that has stuck in the memory and to top it all we lost 5-1

My old man used to take me and some mates to away games in the late 60's. Bristol City was always problems in The East End stand, Swindon behind the goal and Derby at the old Baseball ground, in fact I can't recall a single game that was incident free. It was difficult to say how many travelled due to no segregation and fans were less likely to congregate in groups as they would certainly be picked off. London always seemed the worse for problems and I can remember as a 9 year old ducking under the seat of a train to Palace as Chelsea threw bricks through the windows while the train was stationary. The old man stopped going in the early 70's and it ended up with just mobs travelling with very few women, kids and old folk. It ended up that any away fan was at risk of being attacked just for wearing opposition colours, a trip to somewhere like Millwall in opposition colours walking to the ground would almost certainly lead to a beating. the policing was shite with a attitude that you knew the consequences if you travelled.
