Warnock to alter Whittingham's role

Neil Warnock admits he may have to alter Cardiff City legend Peter Whittingham's role with the Bluebirds

Whittingham was subbed off in the 68th minute of the clash with Bristol City as the Bluebirds twice came from behind to clinch a dramatic win over their Severnside rivals.

Neil Warnock says club stalwart Peter Whittingham still has a huge part to play at Cardiff City despite his withdrawal from the pitch in the Bluebirds' stunning 3-2 Severnside derby win over Bristol City.

The midfielder celebrated 10 years with the club ahead of the trip to Ashton Gate where he was substituted midway through the second half as the Bluebirds went on to claim a dramatic late victory over Lee Johnson's side.

Whittingham's replacement Junior Hoilett helped to transform the outcome of the match by setting up fellow substitute Kadeem Harris who scored Cardiff's second equaliser.

But Warnock admits that, while 32-year-old Whittingham won't always be capable of performing for 90 minutes in every game any more, the club icon still has a massive role to play with the Bluebirds.

"He can't always cover the ground I want him to and I just felt that we needed a bit more pace so I put Hoilett and Harris on (against Bristol City)." .

"I thought they were brilliant when they came on.

"But Whittingham's still got a huge part to play at this club.

"It may come in spurts now, you can't expect someone to play every minute as they get on in their career.

"But he still has a big part to play with us."

Whittingham missed the 1-0 victory over Aston Villa through injury and was rested for the FA Cup third round defeat to Fulham at the Cardiff City Stadium.

But he was thrown straight back into the Bluebirds' starting line up for the Severnside derby having not played since the 2-2 draw with Brentford on Boxing Day.

Warnock boss admitted he questioned why he is still involved in football as the Bluebirds went behind for a second time against the Robins .

But after a stunning late show at Ashton Gate, the Bluebirds left Bristol with all three points ahead of Warnock's meeting with Vincent Tan on Saturday night.

The Cardiff manager admitted Tan was pleased with the progress the club were making under his leadership while the club's January transfer business was also discussed.

But while he remains in the hunt for players to bolster his squad in January, Warnock heaped praise on centre-back Sol Bamba who he signed in his first week as Cardiff manager.

"Bamba has been as good as anything I could of hoped for," added Warnock.
"He's very experienced and he's just what we needed. I'm pleased really because I know I could get a lot out of him."

Warnock is spot on, Whitts is coming towards the back end of his career but use him wisely and you'll still get quality. Meanwhile I think it's time we start looking to the future and bringing in extra creativity.

We all love Warnock and trust him, but we have been playing underdog rear guard football since he got here and we needed to. At some point we are going to have to own and control a game, step forward sir Peter.
If its going to be a real scrap Gunnar and O'Keefe, if you need to play a bit Gunnar and Whits. Although i would do away with wingers, play 433 and have Whitts, Gunnar and ifs its a scrap O'Keefe or a bit more football then Ralls.

Good post mate. The trouble is the few Whitts haters on here just can't understand that. They think he should be everything.
Slam into tackles like Roy Keane, pass the ball like Juan Mata and get box to box like Pogba!!
