Bristol City are taking extra precautions to ensure Saturday's crunch Severnside derby showdown against Cardiff goes ahead at Ashton Gate.

Snow and freezing conditions have been forecast for the West region during the next 24 hours leading to the Met Office to issue a weather warning.

The weather warning comes into force at midday on Thursday and is currently expected to last until about 9pm.

Any snowfall will happen in the early afternoon, the Met Office said, but sleet is more likely.

The amber snow warning has been updated to include Bristol as an affected area.

Sub-zero conditions could potentially give rise to an issue with the Ashton Gate playing surface.

City had undersoil heating installed when moving their Desso pitch as part of their stadium redevelopment project last summer, but the facility is not yet ready to be switched on.

The Robins will instead rely on heavy covers, which will used to cover the pitch this evening. These will stay in place until Bristol Rugby play on Friday night and then be put back in readiness for Saturday's midday kick-off against Cardiff.

City head of media Adam Baker confirmed: "We are aware of the weather forecast and have taken necessary steps to ensure te pitch is playable and the game goes ahead as planned.

"The pitch will be covered and heat lamps are also available, so we do not envisage any problems."

Couple of interesting points there.

So they've got undersoil heating but it hasn't been connected yet!

Sounds a bit like the game we had called off at home to Leicester I think it was a few seasons ago when we had the undersoil heating but couldn't find 50p to put in the meter to turn it on.

Also I'm amazed that they are playing rugby on it on Friday night and then football at 12 o clock the next day! :o

Good job our style of playing involves very little keeping the ball on the floor nowadays. :laughing6:

When the egg shared our stadium I'm sure there always used to be at least a week between our fixtures and the egg or if not, we played first so that when the egg churned up the pitch (even if it was supposed to be a "special grass mix") at least we weren't playing again for a while afterwards.

Whatever happens Saturday it won't be as bad as when we went over there for the FA Cup 3rd round game in 2010.

It started snowing about 30 minutes before we left South Wales and by the time we got 15 minutes in to our journey the snow was sticking and growing like f**k.

Didn't think the game was going to be on or that we would get home

It was freezing, baltic conditions at the gate that night.

that's the one - I was driving my son back from a music lesson on the M4 when the snow started and it was a total whiteout within a couple of minutes. Got home in time for the match though :occasion5:
