The Irish international has been catching the eye of many Championship clubs

It has been a strangely quiet week in an otherwise busy January transfer window at Cardiff City.

Last week saw Lex Immers depart , following Marouane Chamakh and Kieran Richardson out of the Cardiff exit doors, while Ibrahim Meite and Greg Halford have arrived from Harrow and Rotherham respectively.

But this week has seen the Bluebirds show a reported interest in Aberdeen's in form winger Johnny Hayes, as Neil Warnock attempts to add some attacking flair to his Bluebirds' squad.

But who is and why are Cardiff City interested in him?

It has been reported that Cardiff had entered talks with Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen over a possible £500,000 deal for Ireland wide man Hayes.

The Republic of Ireland international was heavily linked with a move to the South Wales last summer but the move never materialised.

Warnock has admitted he is looking to sign three or four players in the window, and Hayes would become the Bluebirds third signing of the window after Halford and Meite.

Johnny Hayes has been impressive for Aberdeen this season
Who is he?

Born in Dublin, Hayes is a 29-year old Ireland international winger currently playing at Aberdeen.

What has he done in his career so far?

Having started in Reading's youth academy and signing his professional contract, places in the Royals' squad were limited.

The 29-year old had two loan spells at MK Dons and Forest Green Rovers, where he scored on debut in the FA Trophy.

Having failed to make an appearance for Reading, Hayes was released from his contract and moved to Leicester City. The Irishman then made his debut for the Foxes against Southampton, showing speed and determination and was the stand-out performer in an under-performing side.

However, places in the squad became limited as Leicester rose up the league pyramid, the Irishman was released after only seven first team appearances and moved to Scotland, where he has enjoyed the best days of his career.

His goals guided Inverness Caledonian Thistle to the Scottish Premier League and and a Challenge Cup final against Dundee, during a three-year stint with 'Caley'.

In 2012 Hayes moved to Aberdeen where he has made 149 appearances and netted 19 goals to help the Dons challenge Celtic for Scottish League titles.

Why are Cardiff interested?

The Bluebirds have been crying out for goals - and pace - this season, especially from the wing.

Hayes would add that dimension of speed and power which has been lacking in recent campaigns. The 29-year-old has bagged six goals and five assists, which have fired the Dons into third place in the Scottish Premiership.

And with Warnock looking to strengthen his squad, Hayes would be the perfect fit to add goals to the team.

Where would he fit in?

Cardiff have a number of wide men on their books at the moment with the likes of, Craig Noone, Kadeem Harris, Junior Hoilett and Anthony Pilkington.

But Noone and Hoilett have only managed to find the net once between this season while Harris is still waiting for his first senior Bluebirds' goal. It is thought Pilkington could be close to a departure despite hitting six league goals this season.

Hayes' versatility could make him an attractive prospect for Warnock. He can feature down the left or right and has been lauded for his work rate, which is always a trait the former QPR and Sheffield United boss looks for when buying new players.

Aberdeen have knocked back claims they've rejected a Cardiff City bid for Jonny Hayes as the Bluebirds continue to chase the winger.

Still, it is known that Warnock is keen on Hayes.

Reports in Scotland claimed the Dons knocked back a £500,000 offer from Neil Warnock for the Irish flier.

But a spokesman for the SPL club told local paper, the Evening Express, that there had been no formal approach for the 29-year-old.
as he looks to give his side a January boost having already brought in defender Greg Halford from Rotherham last week, as well as handing a contract to rookie non-league striker Ibrahim Meite.

Cardiff face competition from Championship rivals for Republic of Ireland international Hayes, who has 18 months remaining on his Pittodrie contract.

Aberdeen have flown to Dubai ahead of their return to domestic action with Hayes' future still unclear, Dons boss Derek McInnes said to be ready to speak on the subject later on Wednesday.

Warnock has said he hoped to target three or four signings, and has made room in his squad by moving on Lex Immers, releasing Marouane Chamakh and Kieran Richardson while also extending Tom Adeyemi's stay at Rotherham as part of the Halford deal.

here we go again Annis, same old story every year, we publicise the fact we're interested in a player, other clubs get involved and BINGO off somewhere else he goes, who to blame ? Local Press ? Agent ? Messageboards :D ?

mate of mine reckons he'd have him straight away and he supports Hibs !!
