Cardiff City hot prospect Tommy Sullivan has joined Colchester United on a trial-basis and he has already netted for the under-23 setup.
Tommy O’Sullivan who has been told to find a new club by Cardiff City has joined up with Colchester United for a trial.
The much thought of youngster represented Colchester United under-23s last night and scored a fine free-kick in a 3-2 win over Ipswich Town’s development squad.
Interestingly, controversial former Cardiff ‘player recruitment man’ Iain Moody is now in charge of the incomings at Colchester United and may have the final say on whether O’Sullivan makes the grade.
The League Two club will make a decision on O’Sullivan in the near future but with his contract expiring at the end of the season, he may be a safe option.
O’Sullivan impressed on his debut with first team manager John McGreal looking on, doing his chances of securing a professional club no harm.
The 21-year-old made his professional debut for the Bluebirds back in 2012 in a League Cup tie against Northampton Town and he’s gone on to represent Port Vale and Newport County across four loan spells.
The Bluebirds’ academy product who was awarded with FAW Young Player of the Year in 2015, has represented his country throughout the younger age groups and he may be given a good chance to rejuvenate his career with Colchester United.

That's a shame, I know it happens but it seems to happen to us an awfull lot, good luck to him

we cant hang on to him forever,he needs to play every week and see if he can grow as a player on his own two feet, personally i dont think we will look back on this one as a loss

no offence to Tommy but hes decent player but not good enough should have been pushing for 1st team by now but nowhere near it also shows why it's likes of Colchester coming in for him good luck for the future though

It certainly seems he's not made the required progress over the last 2-3 seasons that many had hoped. I do hope he proves us wrong for the sake of Welsh football but I can't see it happening. He'll probably go on to be a decent League One or lower Championship player but, unfortunately, we are a side that need more than that from our youth now.

He featured for Colchester’s under-23s on Monday and banged in a free-kick off the underside of the cross bar in front of U’s manager John McGreal

Annis you cant always blame the club when youngsters fail to make the grade.
Tommy has been with the club several years and in that time the youth setup has had some of the brightest and highly regarded coaches in British football.
If a player does not step to the plate at 17-19, he does not have a huge future in the game. Tommy like many players has simply not taken his chance.

Good luck Tommy all the best in the future

Good luck to him. If he was over 30 he might have got into the 1st team.

Voted best Young player in Wales 2015 and yet hasn't been given a chance,I hope he comes back to play for WALES.

Iain Moody, who was formerly with Cardiff City, is head of player resources for League Two Colchester.

He should have been given a run of games at end of last season to prove whether he was up to championship football. Sadly Slade never gave youth it's chance.

Obviously not good enough so what would a run of games do?
Should we do that with every academy player give them a run of games just to make sure?

Strange 1 this, as boy in work is best friends with him. Speaking to Tommys father last night and he was saying club wont let him go and Colchester might have to be a loan. Even tho the family want it permanent now.
All we are hearing in press is Cardiff want rid but his family are saying different as club wasn't letting him. He turned down a loan to Leyton Orient in summer which he admits now was a mistake on his part

How can people say he ain't good enough when he's never been played ? If you don't play them you won't find out . Simple really surely?

I have watched him play several times for the Development team. At that level , if he was really pressing for a first team squad place he really should have been putting in stand out performances. The reality is that he didn`t show anything more than other players in the team for the vast majority of games. Unfortunately , he doesn`t seem to have progressed much as a player over the last couple of years. A move to another club might give him the chance to "go again" as it were and show that he can still make it as a player at a higher level.

Don't be so ridiculous. You can't give every young player a chance but 1 or 2 deserve the opportunity. What is the point in having an academy if you don't give youngsters the chance. Plenty of parents who have talented kids will take a look at us and will say no as so few kids are given a chance.
It was good to seeing Mark Harris make his debut on Sunday. As a fan growing up there was nothing better than seeinglocal kids playing for us. I loved seeing Searle, Blake and Perry giving all for their boyhood club. Would love to have O'Sullivan get a few games instead of O'Keefe.

Most on here do. Sad that people like paulwallace have to resort to being obnoxious when I reply to a thread. One of the reasons why I rarely post these days.

You really are a baby because I said something you didn't like it's obnoxious.
If the club feel he is not at the standard then why should he get a run of games?

Slade could not spot talent if it came up and slapped him in the face. O'Sullivan clearly has a talent otherwise he wouldn't have been named Wales young player of year for 2015. Don't let facts like that get in the way though.

He's always looked a tidy player and he will probably go on to have a decent career in the lower leagues. You need that little bit extra for this level though and as others have said he wouldve really stood out week in week out in the 23's if he had that little bit extra to be a championship player. It's a shame because I was hopeful he would've made the grade, fingers crossed there's some new fresh talent in the academy because with Bellars overlooking it you know he'll be keen to bring them through.

seen him many times and thought there seemed no improvement, Shame but he seemed to plateau out for me, go somewhere else, get game time, and don't forget before you blame Slade he was getting feedback from youth/DVP coaches who either were ignored or gave negative feedback. ( IMO its the latter )
Cruel business is the Academy as the fail/progress ratio at all clubs shows, seems a young player would have to be on his A game all the time and maybe sometimes play through injuries or try to hard.
Another view on this, (not so much us) would be that the amount of foreign players at clubs, I think we need a curb on that.
