Bristol City

Full name: Bristol City Football Club
Nickname(s): The Robins
Founded: 1894 as Bristol South End
Ground: Ashton Gate Stadium
Capacity: 27,000
Owner: Stephen Lansdown
Head coach: Lee Johnson
League: Championship

Bristol City Football Club is a professional association football club based in Bristol, England. Their ground is Ashton Gate, located in the southwest of the city. They currently play in the Championship after winning League One during the 2014–15 season. In sealing the League One title, Bristol City became only the second team to win both the third-tier championship and Football League Trophy double during the same season.

Bristol City won the Welsh Cup – despite being an English club – in 1934. In 1907 they finished runners-up in Football League Division One, which is their highest ever final position. In 1909 they lost the FA Cup final to Manchester United, their only final. Since relegation in 1911, however, they only returned to the top division from 1976 to 1980 and did not contend for any honours then. In 1982, Bristol City became the first English club to suffer three consecutive relegations. They were promoted to the Football League Championship in the 2006–07 season after finishing second in League One but failed to make a second consecutive promotion to the Premier League after they were defeated by Hull City in the 2008 Football League Championship play-off Final at Wembley Stadium. With victories in 1986, 2003 and 2015, Bristol City are now the most successful team in the Football League Trophy.

The club's nickname is "The Robins", and a robin featured on the club's badge from 1976 to 1994. Official club merchandise, including replica kits, still has a label showing a robin. An attempt by the club to alter the badge was abandoned after it was criticised fiercely by fans. The team's main rivals are Bristol Rovers in the Bristol derby and Cardiff City in the Severnside derby, along with other regional teams in the West Country derby.

Bristol City's current manager is Lee Johnson; a former Bristol City player who made 199 appearances for the club. Coincidentally, he is the son of former City manager Gary Johnson, who took City to the Championship play-off final in 2008, where they eventually lost 0–1 to Hull City.

Key facts

Club: Bristol City FC
Opening: 1890s (est.)
Capacity: 21,497 seats

History and description

Ashton Gate Stadium was the home of Bedminster FC until they in 1900 merged with Bristol City. The merged club first moved to Bristol City’s ground at St John’s Lane, but in 1904 back to Ashton Gate.

The ground was gradually developed in the following years and in 1913 hosted an international between England and Wales. Ashton Gate set its record attendance in 1935 when 43,335 people attended an FA Cup tie versus Preston North End.

In 1958, a new main stand, the Williams Stand, opened. Twelve years later, in 1970, the new Dolman Stand was built on the opposite side.

The ground remained largely unchanged until the 1990s when it got converted into an all-seater. At the same time (in 1994), the new Atyeo Stand was built behind one of the goals. One year later, a new lower tier got added to the Dolman Stand.

In the 2000s, Bristol City started exploring the possibilities of building a new modern stadium. Plans were made for a 30,000-seater just south of Ashton Gate in the Ashton Vale area, therefore dubbed Ashton Vale Stadium, but heavy resistance of local residents and environmental groups first delayed and ultimately cancelled the plans.

In late 2013, Bristol City instead presented plans for the redevelopment of Ashton Gate, first as a back-up for the Ashton Vale plans, but since April 2014 as their principal plans. Over a period of two years starting in the summer of 2014, both the Williams and Wedlock Stand will get rebuilt, while the other two stands will get refurbished. This will result in a modern stadium with a capacity of 26,000 seats and increased hospitality facilities.

They look like they are there for the taking having lost their last six league games but something tells me this one is going to be a draw.

1-1 or 2-2.

This I would love

However I would go for 1-2 city as we have a horrible habit of sitting back on a lead and inviting pressure. We were lucky not to conced against Villa in the second half.

Bristol City have made three signings so far but they have confirmed they are after more.

Jens Hegeler, Milan Djuric and Bailey Wright were all signed by the Robins last week.

Now the club's chief operating officer Mark Ashton has confirmed there is still more business to come with potential for more signings to take place at BS3 before the month is up.

The club is remaining busy in the lead up to their Severnside derby against Cardiff City on Saturday at Ashton Gate. It is expected the club's three new signings will be making their league debuts having played for City in their FA Cup tie against Fleetwood Town on Saturday.

Date and Time: Saturday 14th January (12.30)

Venue: Ashton Gate

Cardiff City travel to Ashton Gate to take on Severnside Rivals Bristol City as they look to bounce back from a disappointing cup defeat to Fulham.

The Bluebirds travel across the Severn Bridge to take on rivals Bristol City as they look to make it back-to-back league wins, following victory over Aston Villa a fortnight ago.

The Villa win was followed by a disappointing FA cup defeat at home to fellow Championship club Fulham with a much-changed line-up.

The Severnside Derby is set up perfectly with both teams sitting level in the Championship table and separated by just goal difference. Bizarrely, when the two teams met in October they were separated by fourteen places and nine points.

Bristol City’s fall from the top is thanks to a shocking run which has seen them win just two of their last 13 games, a run seemingly started by a 2-1 defeat against Cardiff in the Severnside Derby at Cardiff City stadium in October.

Last time out, the Robins drew at home against League one outfit Shrewsbury Town in the 3rd round of the FA Cup, topping off a disappointing week following defeat to Reading at home in the league last Monday, despite taking a two-goal lead.

When the two sides met at Ashton Gate last season, Cardiff come away with a 2-0 win with goals from Lex Immers and Stuart O’Keefe. The Bluebirds have won three of the last five Severnside Derbies and Bristol have only won one, back in 2012.

Team News

Jazz Richards has returned to full fitness after starting against Fulham in the FA Cup last time out and Neil Warnock will have a fully fit side to choose from. Kenneth Zohore was rested for last week’s cup exit and will be expected to start.

Six wurzels related questions ahead of Saturday’s encounter which I’m sure has been described as “massive” by someone, somewhere – the answers will be posted on Saturday.

60s. Name the player who scored twice for City in a win at Ashton Gate during this decade.

70s. Sadly, I make it that eight players who featured for City in matches against Bristol City during this decade have passed away, can you name them?

80s. Who is this and what makes him unique among City players in this decade when it comes to Bristol City? :bluebird:

IMG_4783.PNG

90s. Can you name this member of a City team that played Bristol City during this decade? :ayatollah:

IMG_4784.PNG

00s. Given our woeful record against the wurzels from 1971 to 2003, the following City players from early in this decade will have belonged to a very exclusive club during that thirty two year period – John Hallworth, Russell Perrett, Richard Carpenter, Kevin Nugent, Jason Fowler and Danny Hill. Can you identify how you became a member of this club – as a clue, you would have to have played for us more than once against Bristol City to be eligible for membership.

10s. Prior to our 2-1 win in October, who was the last Bristol City keeper to concede a goal for them in a Severnside derby at Cardiff City Stadium?
