Paul Went 1949-2017 RIP

Thu 05 Jan 2017

The club are saddened to hear of the passing of central defender Paul Went, aged 67.

Went came through the youth system at the club and is the youngest player to have represented the first-team, making his debut aged 15 years and 327 days when facing Preston North End in a 2-2 draw on September 4, 1965.

He signed professional forms a year later, and during his first spell at the O’s he made 50 appearances and scored five goals before leaving the club to join Charlton Athletic in June 1967 in a deal which helped keep the club afloat.

Went would also go on to feature for Fulham, Portsmouth and Cardiff City before making a return to Orient in September 7, 1978, and playing another 45 league games for the club, scoring a further three goals.

After finishing his playing career at the club, Went became the club’s reserve coach and club scout before taking over the managerial reins for a 21-day spell in the 1980-81 season.

Went continued his association with the club, acting as a matchday host for a number of seasons.

We send our condolences to his family and friends at this very sad time and will announce any funeral arrangements in due course.

An old school no nonsense centre half in the Don Murray mould.

A real no nonsense CB who always gave his all. I will remember him for the last game of the 1976/77 season at Home to Carlisle where defeat could have seen us relegated. Paul dislocated his shoulder but wouldn't agree to being substituted instead insisting that they put his shoulder "Back in", which the club doctor did. Paul returned to the field and didn't shy out of a single challenge for the rest of the game. We drew 1-1 and were safe.

R.I.P Paul.

players like him are the ones who give us some of our fondest memories - not the only ones, obviously, but the commitment, the heart, the absolute determination, is a massive show of loyalty to us fans and to his teammates.

Am I right, when I say he scored late on in an FA cup tie at Brisbane road, against the O,s in 1975, when the game seemed to go on for ever! Was there, very young, and it was over 40 years ago!

RIP Paul Went

He really was also one of my favourite players watching the City as a teenager. Gave it 100% every time.

One of my favourite goals he scored as a makeshift forward was powering in header from a fabulous Freddie Pethard cross in @78 towards the Grange End versus Preston or Oldham or some club like that.

When he left I wrote to him to wish him the best and he replied thanking me. He then went on if I recall to star for Orient in their FA Cup exploits which led to us signing Peter Kitchen a few years later.
