Football fans were left slightly confused this afternoon after a low-flying plane carrying a huge banner was seen passing over Cardiff City Stadium during the first half of the Bluebirds' clash with Aston Villa.

The banner plane, bearing the words "Operation Frankish stands with Wales", caused a bit of a stir inside the stadium shortly before Joe Ralls put the home team in from on 16 minutes.

The stunt was the work of Operation Frankish , an organisation set up to campaign against animal cruelty and to force politicians to take a stronger stand against abusers.

The staunch animal rights campaigners have pulled off similar messages in England in Scotland in recent weeks, including during the Manchester City v Chelsea match. They also targeted the Rangers v Hearts game.

The group was set up by a Scottish dog owner after brothers Daniel and Andrew Frankish were filmed brutally torturing a bulldog named Baby in North Yorkshire.

The campaigners are calling for harsher sentences for people who abuse animals.

The group's social media accounts reveal the stunt in Wales has been planned for some time.

A spokesman for the group has previously said: "We need to send a strong message to these perpetrators and say in a civilised society in 2016, we cannot tolerate these behaviours.

"If they are going to do these things they need to be punished appropriately.

"In the case of Andrew and Daniel [Frankish], their punishment was a home curfew. That is not just weak but completely ironic as what they did, they did in the house."

I agree these 2 guys were treated too leniently but if anyone feels that way,why don't they complain to the Attorney General who is legally bound to look at the sentence, and can impose a harsher sentence. Why bother with a plane message that very few understand.

I didn't know what the message meant but since seeing the plane and reading wales online I now am fully aware and I support them.
