Well and truly deserved. Incredible sportsman, athlete and consumate professional
He may be relatively dour to most but I think he's a humble and genuine bloke and worked incredibly hard for what he has achieved in an unbelievable era of tennis possible the greatest of all time and holds himself extremely well away from court too
What he has achieved this year alone is amazing and hopefully has a few more good years in the tank

Agree. Well deserved on his sporting achievements alone
No.1 in the world (the first Brit ever, I believe) and both two-time Wimbledon and Olympic champion
I'm not overly 'into' tennis but this has to be seen as a great achievement and he does seem to have matured as a person on and off the tennis court since his early pedantic days
He recently won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award for a record third time
Well done, Sir Andy Murray (and every other sporting Brit who was honoured this year)

Absolute joke - the multi milionaire is now a Sir.
This and the majority of these awards are pointless and reward those who are doing THEIR job for which they get PAID

Never get a medal for doing your 'job' for which you got paid, Fusilier?
That's not a churlish question. You just appear to be a little bitter about Murray's success and I'm just curious as to whether you believe there is a line to be drawn between those who serve (no Murray pun intended) and those who achieve in any sphere?
Seems to me that the 'system' allows people to be rewarded for many things and (having seen a close friend recently get a surprise MBE for unrelenting services to a certain charity) I think it can often be seen as 'just reward' for those who go the extra mile in anything with which they are involved
There will always be anomalies, but I believe 'recognition' for achievement can be a positive thing in society

Not a tennis fan but he thoroughly deserves it, he is dour but a true professional.
Delighted to hear The great Mo Farah has been knighted aswell-incredible athlete

Personally I like Murray but he's admitted it's too soon for him to have it. I think knighthood is a bit far yet maybe in a few more years. And why is Jessica ennis having 1?? Dame my arse

Got a couple thanks for serving my country, living in shit conditions, being away from home for months at an end. I do not begrudge anyone being recognised for doing well but a Knighthood for playing tennis just is ridiculous.
People like your friend, an unsung hero, giving their own time deserve recognition - not these pampered sports stars etc

Quite right honors should only be for people who have done good in the country, there are lots of charity workers, carers, and loads of other people who spend their life helping others, pop stars, actors and sports persons should not get anything, absolutely ridiculous

Sincere congratulations on your medals; well deserved for putting your life on the line for others and I whole-heartedly appreciate the sacrifices made by all our armed services
I see your point to an extent and I often disagree with some who are honoured simply "for being in the right place or knowing the right people" but whether we like it or not, we live in a world where 'sport' is the new gladiatorial theatre and people like Murray (and footballers, cricketers, athletes, etc.) are seen by the masses as heroes and it is not unreasonable for them to be recognised for what they achieve; albeit a rightly different system to that which awarded people like your good self and other 'real world' heroes

I couldn't have put it better. Stick this and the royal family up your arse.
Give these honours to people who make a difference like nurses, surgeons, care workers and the heroes who fight for us

Agree with this. If you are not a sporting personality or tv personality, providing you have a bit of money and are a donor to whichever paryt is in power, you will get some sort of gong. I pay no attention to most of the awards dished out nowadays like confetti. The only ones that interest me are those given to unsung heroes who we know nothing about until they are put forward for an award. In my eyes making Andy Murray a knight is a joke, and just goes to show how crap British tennis has been over the years. And don't even get me started on the likes of Victoria Beckham etc. I am far more impressed with people like someone on this thread who have earned their medals for service to their country, rather than someone who plays a game or acts in soap. Just my opinion, but I think the homours list is devalued when you look at a lot of the names put forward.
Sat Dec 31, 2016 3:46 pm
Of the 1197 people who are on the list, almost three quarters of them are earning recognition for work in their local community. These are the people who thoroughly deserve their rewards but most are not named in the media. I think Murray, Farah and Hill deserve awards but knighthood and dame is too much too early the same as for Wiggins and Hoy.

Said before Knighthoods used to be awarded for valour on the battlefield, who the fekk would follow Elton John or Cliff Richard into battle
