I don't think there was a dip It was quality throughout the decade the start of the 80s period is my favorite.

Steve Winwood was very highly rated in the late 60's.

So much that the great Jimi Hendrix wanted Steve to play with him on Voodoo Chile on Electric Ladyland.

You HAD to be at the top of your game for Jimi to choose you to play on his records.

Eric Clapton also thought highly of him and still does.

What I meant was in today's standards he's less remembered unlike the greats of Jimi Hendrix The Beatles , Rolling Stones etc and I would put Steve Winwood in that category.

I thought the mid 80s was very good with especially 85-87 period with Micheal Jackson, Wham, Europe, Bon Jovi and many more I think it was great throughout.
